Trump's Niece Shares Data That Takes Sheen Off Ex-President's Iowa Win: 'People In Both Parties Running Away From Donald'

Donald Trump came out on top in the Iowa caucuses held Monday which also saw businessman Vivek Ramaswamy ending his campaign and endorsing the former president. Mary Trump, the niece of the GOP frontrunner said on Tuesday that she does not have much significance to the result.

What Happened: Looking into the actual numbers beyond what was reported by the mainstream media, there is hope that Donald Trump’s campaign can be derailed, Mary Trump said in a substack post.

The turnout was very low despite the high turnout predicted for the 2024 Iowa caucus, the psychologist and author said. She noted only 110,000 voters participated compared to 187,000 Republicans who turned out in 2016, making up less than 15% of the state’s 752,000 registered GOP voters. The turnout was the lowest in 24 years, she added.

More significant is that 49% of caucusing Republicans did not choose Donald Trump, his niece said. “Sure, Donald won Iowa, but almost 50% of Republican voters who bothered to show up for the caucus chose someone else,” she said.

Why It’s Important: Citing NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll, Mary Trump said almost half of Nikki Haley's supporters said they would vote for President Joe Biden over Donald Trump. She also cited New York Times analysis, which said the result from Iowa, a solidly red state, does not offer meaningful clues for the 2024 general election.

Political strategist Simon Rosenberg highlighted several of Donald Trump’s weaknesses, including 35%-40% of GOP voters aren’t supporting him nationally, and a majority of GOP voters in the early states backing him, she noted. He also said the Republican party has meaningfully splintered and Donald Trump only has a slender four-point lead over Haley in New Hampshire.

Mary Trump said, “To me, this data shows good news: AMERICANS are not monsters; people in both parties are running away from Donald.” But the psychologist does not rule out him being reelected. “Donald's vulnerabilities aside, he still has the entirety of the Republican Party, and its willingness to do whatever it takes to get him back into the Oval Office, supporting him,” she said.
