A week after eliminating the role of technical program manager (TPM) at Instagram, impacting nearly 60 employees, Meta Platforms Inc. META is now reportedly looking to expand it to other organizations.
What Happened: Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta is said to be considering either axing the TPM role or announcing significant cuts, reported Business Insider.
Earlier in January, Meta reportedly axed the TPM role at its popular photo-sharing service, Instagram. This affected 60 employees, who were asked to find an alternate role within the organization by March or risk termination.
Although the specific departments for the TPM role consolidation are yet to be finalized, probable candidates include the Facebook platform, Marketplace, and WhatsApp. The TPM and PM roles often have “very similar” functions, but TPMs are usually more involved in highly specific or technical projects.
Moreover, this move is in line with Zuckerberg's focus, "Year of Efficiency."
In March 2023, Meta was planning to terminate thousands more jobs, separate from its efforts to flatten the organization. These layoffs were reportedly based on financial targets and expected to be finalized the following week.
Amazon, Google Begin 2024 With Layoffs: Other big technology companies, namely Amazon.com Inc. AMZN and Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG GOOGL Google, have also started 2024 with layoffs.
While Amazon let go of 5% of its staff in the "Buy with Prime" unit, impacting 30 employees, Google's layoffs are far worse, with reports pegging the number at over 1,000.
Apple Inc. AAPL is no longer a stranger to this, either – Cupertino is reportedly planning to dissolve its 121-member AI team in San Diego. The team members have been asked to either relocate to Austin, Texas, or face termination by Apr. 26.
