Ross Gerber, the president and CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management and a Tesla Inc TSLA bull and investor, now sees Apple Inc AAPL selling more Vision Pro reality headsets in 2024 than Tesla would sell Cybertrucks.
What Happened: Gerber said in a post on X on Sunday that he had a bet with a colleague that Tesla would sell more Cybertrucks in 2024 than Apple could sell Vision Pros. However, after the weekend, Gerber is not so sure.
“This bet is not looking good…. I think apple had a good weekend…,” Gerber wrote.
Vision Pro sold out soon after pre-orders opened on Friday. The device is scheduled for launch on Feb. 2.
In a post reply, Gerber explained his rationale for placing the bet in the first place. While the Cybertruck has 2 million preorders and could sell 100,000 if Tesla could produce so many, the Vision Pro is a ‘ very expensive headset’ with no apps, Gerber wrote.
However, the two products are rather incomparable, belonging to different segments and catering to different needs.
Pricing And Demand: Priced at $3,499, the Apple Vision Pro reality headset falls on the higher end of the cost spectrum. In comparison, the cheapest version of Cybertruck presently starts at $79,990 with the higher-end version priced at close to $100,000.
Demand, however, is high for both the Cybertruck and Vision Pro.
During Tesla's third-quarter earnings call in October, a month before the Cybertruck's delivery event, Musk described demand for the Cybertruck as "off the charts." However, he cautioned that achieving the annual delivery target of 250,000 Cybertrucks might be delayed until 2025. The company dug its own grave with the Cybertruck, Musk said, hinting at production scaling challenges.
In comparison, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, achieving a shipment volume of 500,000 units for Vision Pro this year should not be challenging. Musk himself has said that he is looking forward to trying the headset.
