Big tech companies like Microsoft Corp. MSFT, Nvidia Corp. NVDA, Meta Platforms Inc. META, and others have announced pledges to aid President Joe Biden's project to make AI research more accessible.
What Happened: The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has kicked off the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot.
This AI research pilot is a joint venture between the NSF, 10 federal agencies, and 25 private sector, nonprofit, and philanthropic organizations. The pilot aims to provide U.S.-based researchers and educators with advanced computing, datasets, models, software, training, and user support.
This comes after President Biden signed Executive Order 14110 in October, mandating the NSF to initiate the AI research pilot within 90 days.
The pilot also includes Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Intel Corp. INTC, Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG GOOGL Google, Palantir Technologies Inc. PLTR, AMD AMD, IBM IBM, among others.
The pilot will focus on four areas and will initially support AI research to advance safe, secure, and trustworthy AI, as well as the application of AI to challenges in healthcare and environmental and infrastructure sustainability.
"The breadth of partners that have come together for this pilot underscores the urgency of developing a National AI Research Resource for the future of AI in America,” said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan.
Researchers can apply for initial access to NAIRR pilot resources through the portal at nairrpilot.org. A broader call for proposals from the research community will be released in spring 2024.
Why It Matters: The launch of the NAIRR pilot comes on the heels of the establishment of the United States AI Safety Institute.
Announced by Vice President Kamala Harris at the UK AI Safety Summit, the institute is tasked with developing guidelines, benchmark tests, and best practices for examining potentially harmful AI systems.
This move was in response to the AI executive order signed by President Joe Biden and followed a meeting of major tech leaders in Washington to discuss AI regulations.
