Apple Inc.’s AAPL new Vision Pro headset, priced at $3,499, is causing inconvenience for users who forget their passcodes.
What Happened: Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that customers who forget the passcode for their Vision Pro headsets are being instructed to return the device to an Apple store or send it to AppleCare customer support for a reset.
Apple’s support staff is also addressing issues related to the Optic ID, an eye-scanning tool for device access, and the built-in Apple Music app. If the passcode is entered incorrectly multiple times, the headset becomes disabled. If the passcode is not remembered after a waiting period, the device must be returned to Apple for a reset, losing all content.
Unlike other Apple products, the Vision Pro does not have a mechanism for users to reset the passcode themselves.
A mail sent by Benzinga has yet to elicit any response from the Apple team.
One user on Apple’s community forum shared that Apple’s support staff was overwhelmed by calls about the passcode issue. The Vision Pro also lacks a USB-C port for troubleshooting, although Apple has released a special strap for developers to connect the headset to a Mac.
The Vision Pro is Apple’s first major new hardware category since the smartwatch launch almost a decade ago. Despite its high price, the product has received positive reviews for its immersive video playback and productivity features.
Why It Matters: The Vision Pro’s passcode issue comes at a time when Apple has been focusing on enhancing the security features of its devices. In January, the company rolled out the iOS 17.3 update, which included a Stolen Device Protection feature designed to make it more difficult for thieves to exploit the device, even with access to the user’s private passcode. However, the passcode problem with the Vision Pro indicates that there may still be vulnerabilities in Apple’s security measures.
On the other hand, Vision Pro has received positive reviews and high expectations. Former Apple CEO John Sculley recently praised the device, comparing it to the revolutionary iPhone and commending the Apple team for their work on the new product.
