Biden Backing Potential Tiktok Ban Sparks Backlash From Young Voters: 'A Very Fine Line They're Going To Have To Walk'

The support for a possible TikTok ban by President Joe Biden has led to a backlash from young voters. This comes amid his reelection campaign’s efforts to leverage the platform’s influence over young voters.

What Happened: Biden expressed his readiness to sign a bill that could potentially result in TikTok being banned from U.S. app stores and web hosting services. However, young adults who regularly use TikTok are urging lawmakers to rethink and protect the app, The Hill reported on Tuesday.

ByteDance, the China-based company that owns TikTok, has seen its app become increasingly popular among young Americans. Apart from funny videos, the app also serves as a source of news for them.

Lately, TikTok users have started commenting “keep TikTok” or “posted on TikTok” on the content posted by the Biden campaign.

"I think it's going to be a very fine line they're going to have to walk," said Annie Wu Henry, a 28-year-old digital strategist who led Sen. John Fetterman's (D-Pa.) digital strategy during his Senate campaign.

Why It Matters: The bill, which could lead to a ban on TikTok in the U.S. unless it is sold by its Chinese owner, ByteDance Ltd., has already faced opposition from Beijing.

Industry experts have raised concerns about the potential repercussions of a TikTok ban or sale on U.S. tech companies operating in China.

Deepwater Asset Management's managing partner Gene Munster has warned that a ban or sale of TikTok could lead to Chinese retaliation against U.S. tech companies, including Apple Inc. and Tesla Inc.

Moreover, the potential ban could have severe repercussions for content creators and small businesses in the U.S. TikTok’s CEO warned that a ban could jeopardize over 300,000 American jobs and remove billions of dollars from creators’ earnings.
