Expert Says Kim Jong Un's Defiance Aims To Prove UN 'Sanctions' Ineffectiveness'

The effectiveness of the United Nations economic sanctions on North Korea is in question due to the country’s continued ballistic missile activities.

What Happened: The UN Security Council’s inability to agree on new resolutions against North Korea for over half a decade has allowed the nation to circumvent existing sanctions, Nikkei Asia reported on Tuesday. North Korea has exploited this international discord by consolidating relationships with Russia and raising funds via cyberattacks.

According to Maiko Takeuchi, a consulting fellow at Japan’s Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry, “Pyongyang is showing its defiance to drive home the sanctions’ ineffectiveness.”

North Korea has blatantly violated international sanctions, including a prohibition on automobile exports to the country. The country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, was spotted using a limousine gifted by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Furthermore, North Korea’s top missile expert accompanied Kim on a visit to Russian military facilities, potentially infringing sanctions against the transfer of military technologies to North Korea.

The ineffectiveness of the sanctions is underscored by a South Korean startup, SIA, which found evidence of North Korea exporting coal, an activity prohibited by international sanctions.

Trade between North Korea and China is on the rise, further weakening the impact of economic sanctions. Additionally, North Korea’s theft of cryptocurrency reached $1.65 billion in 2022, a significant increase from 2017, as per U.S. blockchain analysis company Chainalysis.

Why It Matters: These developments suggest that current sanctions are inadequate to restrain North Korea’s military development, and it seems unlikely that effective measures to address these loopholes will be implemented soon. This is particularly concerning given North Korea’s recent advancements in its hypersonic missile program, which poses new threats to regional security and U.S. military interests.

Furthermore, Russia’s recent veto on the renewal of the UN panel monitoring the sanctions raises serious doubts about the future effectiveness of the sanctions regime. This comes on the heels of North Korea’s leader publicly asserting his right to destroy South Korea, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.
