Apple Inc. AAPL is moving forward with the settlement process for the infamous “Batterygate” issue. Owners of certain iPhone models in Canada are now invited to stake their claim in the legal resolution of this high-profile case.
What Happened: Canadian iPhone owners who experienced performance throttling due to battery degradation can now file claims to partake in the Batterygate settlement, PhoneArena reported on Monday. This follows a lawsuit targeting specific Apple iPhone models, including the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, or SE running iOS 10.2.1 or later, and the iPhone 7 or 7 Plus with iOS 11.2 or later, before December 21, 2017.
Eligible users are directed to a dedicated website to submit their claims, with a Sep. 2, 2024 deadline. The settlement addresses allegations that Apple intentionally slowed down older iPhone models through software updates.
Why It Matters: In March, Apple consented to a $14.4 million settlement to resolve the class-action lawsuit in Canada. The lawsuit accused the tech giant of deliberately reducing iPhone performance as batteries aged. Eligible iPhone users are expected to receive compensation ranging from CA$17.50 ($12.91) and CA$150 ($110.62)
This settlement comes as Apple has made strides to improve the battery life of its newer devices. The company announced that the iPhone 15 series boasts a significantly longer battery life than initially expected. This move could be seen as an effort to regain consumer trust and avoid future controversies like Batterygate.
As of Monday, Apple’s stock closed at $168.45, experiencing a slight decrease from its previous close of $169.58. The stock’s performance reflects a 0.77% change, with a trading volume 37,425,513.
