Russian Minister Warns 'Westerners Are Teetering Dangerously' Towards Potential Nuclear War As NATO-US Extend Ukraine Support

Amid escalating global tensions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has issued a stark warning that the backing of Ukraine by the U.S., Britain, and France could potentially lead to a direct confrontation between the world’s leading nuclear powers.

What Happened: Lavrov criticized the United States and NATO for being fixated on the concept of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia, a confrontation that could escalate the level of nuclear danger, Reuters reported on Monday.

“The Westerners are teetering dangerously on the brink of a direct military clash between nuclear powers, which is fraught with catastrophic consequences,” Lavrov cautioned.

While the United States and its allies insist they are assisting Ukraine in defending against Russian aggression, Lavrov expressed apprehension over the ‘troika’ of Western nuclear states – the United States, Britain, and France – being key sponsors of what he termed the “criminal Kyiv regime”. He perceives this as a significant strategic risk, leading to an increased level of nuclear danger.

Why It Matters: This warning comes on the heels of the Kremlin’s prediction of a “humiliating fiasco” for the U.S. in its support for Ukraine, drawing parallels with Vietnam and Afghanistan. The Kremlin’s concerns were voiced as the U.S. Congress was on the brink of approving a $60 billion aid package for Ukraine, despite inconsistent support from American conservatives.

Furthermore, the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, is set to express the U.S.'s "deep concerns" over China's backing of Russia's defense industry during his upcoming visit to China, starting Wednesday.
