Mike Johnson Predicts Trump's Return For Second Term: 'I Have Big Plans For The Congress And For The Country'

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) thinks that former president Donald Trump is coming back for a second term at the White House and expressed his desire to continue leading the GOP in the next Congress, Amid significant opposition from conservatives.

What Happened: On Wednesday, during an interview with “The Hill” on Newsnation, Johnson said, "I think Donald Trump's going to win the White House. I think … Republicans will retake the Senate. And I'm convinced we're going to grow the House majority.”

Johnson also defended his leadership style and expressed his intention to retain the position of Speaker in 2025.

"I'm doing my duty, as I've been called by my colleagues to do. I'll continue to do it as long as we're effective — and I think we have been — and I have big plans for the Congress and for the country," Johnson said.

"We have a lot of important work to do, and I'll serve in whatever capacity my colleagues think is appropriate."

Johnson’s comments come amid growing tension with hard-line conservatives. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has announced plans to force a vote on Johnson’s ouster next week. However, only two Republicans have publicly backed this move.

Johnson’s future as Speaker will likely depend on the results of the November elections. If the Republicans gain more seats in the House, Johnson could leverage this to argue for another term. However, securing the required 218 votes for the Speakership could prove challenging among his conservative critics.

Why It Matters: The opposition to Johnson’s leadership has been brewing for a while. Despite the endorsement from Trump, key figures like Greene and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) have continued to voice their dissatisfaction.

Greene has been particularly vocal, criticizing Johnson for collaborating with Democrats to pass major legislation. She has announced her intention to demand a vote next week on a motion to remove Johnson, marking her second attempt to depose a Republican speaker during this Congress.

Despite this, House Democratic leaders have announced they will vote to table a proposal on the ouster resolution against Johnson, effectively nullifying Greene’s efforts. However, Johnson’s position as the top GOP leader in the next Congress remains uncertain, with many hoping his tenure is nearing its end.
