'Wow:' Elon Musk Reacts To Stack Overflow Users' Revolt Against OpenAI Deal

Elon Musk, the tech mogul, expressed surprise at the backlash from Stack Overflow users against a recent deal with OpenAI.

What Happened: On Monday, Musk responded to a post by DogeDesigner highlighting the revolt of Stack Overflow users against the platform’s deal with OpenAI. The users are reportedly upset about their submissions being used to train OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI assistant, with some even attempting to delete their own posts in protest.

Musk simply replied, “Wow.”

Why It Matters: This revolt comes on the heels of the recent announcement of a new API partnership between Stack Overflow and OpenAI, Wired reported on Sunday. The deal aims to integrate Stack Overflow’s technical content with OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI assistant, a move that has sparked controversy among Stack Overflow’s user community.

This reaction also comes amid a backdrop of ongoing tension between Musk and OpenAI, an AI startup he co-founded. Musk initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging a breach of their original founding agreement. OpenAI dismissed Musk’s claims as “frivolous” and “incoherent.”

Recently, Musk accused OpenAI of hypocrisy after the company filed a copyright complaint against a subreddit for using its logo. This latest development with Stack Overflow adds another layer to the ongoing feud between Musk and OpenAI.

Altman recently dismissed rumors about the AI startup developing a search engine or launching GPT-5, instead hinting at some “new stuff” the company is working on, to be revealed at a May 13 event.
