Taiwan Slams China For Creating 'New Normal' With Military Drills: 'Trying To Nibble Away And Annex'

Amid escalating tensions, Taiwan has slammed China for attempting to establish a “new normal” through persistent military exercises and other aggressive actions.

What Happened: Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung stated on Thursday that China is attempting to “nibble away” at Taiwan’s space through military drills and other actions, Reuters reported on Thursday.

China, which considers Taiwan its territory, conducted two days of war games around the island last week following the inauguration of new Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing labels a “separatist”. Although the drills have ended, Chinese military activities continue.

“The Chinese communists are continuing to change the status quo,” Lin Chia-lung said.

“They are creating a new normal, pressing on at every stage, trying to nibble away and annex (us).”

Lin emphasized that Chinese pressure on Taiwan is comprehensive, especially diplomatically, and highlighted Taiwan’s exclusion from international organizations like the World Health Organization.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office reiterated its complaints about Lai and threatened continued military activity.

Adding to the tension, a senior U.S. lawmaker Michael McCaul confirmed that weapons ordered by Taiwan are on their way, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the need for faster delivery.

McCaul further warned that the U.S. is prepared to “declare war” on China if it launches an unprovoked attack on Taiwan, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
