The Israeli government reportedly discreetly conducted a social media campaign to influence American opinion regarding the Gaza war.
What Happened: The Israeli Ministry of Diaspora Affairs initiated and financed this clandestine operation, which spanned across various social media platforms. The campaign was executed by a political marketing firm, Stoic, using AI technology, as reported by The New York Times on Wednesday.
Fake accounts, posing as pro-Israel Americans, were created on platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube. These accounts targeted several U.S. legislators, especially Democrats, urging them to support Israel’s military efforts in Gaza. AI tools like ChatGPT were reportedly used to create posts from these accounts along with three fake publications that ran pro-Israel content.
Both Meta and OpenAI identified and eliminated these accounts, linking them to Stoic.
The campaign commenced shortly after a terror attack by Hamas on Oct. 7. Despite its covert nature, the operation has not significantly impacted public opinion, with a Gallup poll in March showing 55% of Americans disapproving of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Despite this, the Biden administration has pledged $1 billion in military aid to Israel.
Why It Matters: The secret influence campaign by Israel is a part of the larger geopolitical situation in the region. The ongoing conflict has seen a recent escalation at the Israel-Lebanon border. This has led to concerns regarding potential large-scale operations against the Iranian-backed militant group in Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently rejected a U.S.-backed ceasefire plan, emphasizing that military operations would continue until Hamas is dismantled, all hostages are freed, and Gaza no longer poses a threat. This has raised questions about the future of the conflict and the potential impact on regional stability.
