Edward Snowden, the well-known NSA whistleblower, has voiced serious concerns about OpenAI and its offerings, including ChatGPT.
What Happened: Snowden posted a stern warning about OpenAI on the social media platform X on Friday. Snowden’s apprehension stemmed from OpenAI’s recent decision to bring retired U.S. Army general and former NSA head, Paul Nakasone, onto its board of directors.
Snowden referenced a tweet from user @MarioNawfal, which suggested that Nakasone’s role would be to enhance AI’s contribution to cybersecurity. However, Snowden interpreted this move as a “willful, calculated betrayal of the rights of every person on Earth.”
Snowden told his followers, “Do not ever trust OpenAI or its products (ChatGPT etc).” His warning comes at a time when concerns about OpenAI’s safety culture are escalating.
