Former Trump NSA Advises Former President To Cut Ties With China: 'Decouple Economy,' Deploy Marines

The former national security adviser to Donald Trump, Robert O’Brien, has put forth a proposal advocating for the severance of all economic ties with China and deploying marines, should Trump regain the presidency.

What Happened: The details of O’Brien’s proposals are to be published in an upcoming issue of Foreign Affairs magazine. O’Brien, recognized for his stringent views on China, has surpassed his previous public advocacy with these new recommendations Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

O’Brien, who maintains regular communication with Trump, has been increasingly active in the public sphere, engaging with international leaders and voicing criticism of current U.S. foreign policy.

"As China seeks to undermine American economic and military strength, Washington should return the favor," O'Brien reportedly wrote in the article.

"Washington should, in fact, seek to decouple its economy from China's."

If Trump were to secure another term and adopt O’Brien’s suggestions, it could result in significant shifts in U.S. foreign policy. However, it remains uncertain whether Trump would implement these policy recommendations, particularly those that could profoundly affect the U.S. and global economies.

O’Brien’s article, “The Return of Peace Through Strength: Making the Case for Trump's Foreign Policy,” proposes a series of measures to counter China, including expanding the militaries of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, increasing military aid to Taiwan, and reinforcing missile defense and fighter jet protection in the region.

Why It Matters: Fitch Ratings has previously warned about the potential economic consequences of aggressive trade tariffs proposed by Trump, especially against China.

Experts have predicted that a second Trump term could lead to a more confrontational relationship between the U.S. and China. Jia Qingguo, a professor at Peking University, has warned of increased confrontations and a potential large-scale decline in relations, citing the current working group mechanism under President Joe Biden as a means to manage bilateral issues
