Democrats are increasingly becoming underconfident about President Joe Biden‘s ability to serve a second term in the White House as former President Donald Trump begins gaining traction among voters.
What Happened: On Tuesday, author and former Democrat lawmaker Melissa DeRosa highlighted the teetering support for Biden among voters after the presidential debate.
"Donald Trump is really picking up steam," DeRosa said.
“It is not the [Democratic National] Convention, it’s really Ohio which certifies the presidential ballot on Aug. 7. So we have got about 30 days to sort this out. And every day that we're having this conversation, Donald Trump wins."
On the same day, Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) clarified his recent call for President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race and urged for a new candidate for November.
“Here’s the thing: he is not our nominee yet. He is the presumptive nominee. The convention hasn’t happened,” Smith said, adding that many key swing states and senators are beginning to lose confidence in the incumbent president.
“Again, I will issue this plea to the Biden campaign and Biden White House: seriously look at the implications of having President Biden at the top of the ticket in November.”
Why It Matters: Recent polls have indicated a challenging path ahead for Biden. Biden is trailing Trump in all six swing states surveyed by Emerson College on behalf of Democrats for the Next Generation.
From ABC's George Stephanopoulos, to former presidential candidate Nikki Haley, many have started questioning Biden’s competence to serve a second term. However, Biden remains defiant and is committed to running the presidential race against his predecessor. Among the Democrats who are supporting him are Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).
