Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday prompted questions on Open AI CEO Sam Altman‘s new ride – the highly rare Koenigsegg Regera megacar.
Renewed Digs: A Tesla enthusiast on Tuesday posted a short video of Altman driving a Koenigsegg Regera.
“CEO OpenAI driving one of the most expensive cars. How did open AI become a for profit business when it was a non profit?” the enthusiast wrote.
“Great question,” Musk responded, despite having dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI, suggesting that his rivalry with his fellow co-founder at the AI startup has not subsided.
More About Altman’s Ride: The Regera is highly exclusive with only 80 units of the plug-in hybrid vehicle produced in total, each priced at over $1.9 million when new. The vehicles have sold for higher at auctions since Koenigsegg stopped production.
The Swedish automaker currently makes other megacars like the CC850, Gemera, Jesko Absolut, and Jesko Attack.
Musk Vs. Altman: Musk cofounded OpenAI in 2015 with 11 others, including Altman. According to Musk, the original mission of the company was to be a nonprofit organization focused on democratizing AI. The billionaire sued in February for breach of the original founding agreement.
In a series of tweets earlier this year, Musk accused OpenAI of lying and criticized their partnership with Microsoft. He even suggested they change their name to “ClosedAI” if they wanted him to drop the lawsuit.
OpenAI, in turn, termed Musk’s claims as “incoherent” and “frivolous.”
In a document on file with California’s superior court for San Francisco County in March, OpenAI stated, "There is no Founding Agreement, or any agreement at all with Musk, as the complaint itself makes clear."
"The Founding Agreement is instead a fiction Musk has conjured to lay unearned claim to the fruits of an enterprise he initially supported, then abandoned, then watched succeed without him," it read.
