Majority Of Democrats View Kamala Harris As Strong Presidential Contender: Poll

In the wake of growing pressure on President Joe Biden to withdraw his reelection bid, a new poll suggests that the majority of Democrats view Vice President Kamala Harris as a suitable presidential candidate.

What Happened: A survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research revealed that approximately 60% of Democrats believe Harris would excel in the presidential role. The poll found that 20% of Democrats disagree, while another 20% feel they lack enough information to form an opinion.

Following Biden’s underwhelming performance in the June 27 debate, a number of Democrats have expressed their preference for Harris to replace Biden as the party’s presidential nominee, both privately and publicly. Despite this, Harris has consistently backed Biden, defending him robustly after the debate.

However, only around 30% of all Americans believe Harris would make a good president, with half of the respondents expressing doubts about her potential performance as president. Harris’s approval rating is comparable to Biden’s, but fewer Americans have a negative opinion of her.

The poll also showed that Harris is more favored among Black Americans compared to white or Hispanic adults, and she is more disliked by men than by women. Other potential Democratic replacements, like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, are less recognized than Harris.

Why It Matters: Former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci previously speculated that Harris might likely run for office, given the possibility of Biden not completing his term. He suggested this during an episode of the “Rest Is Politics US” podcast, which aired in early July.

Furthermore, Former Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), who serves as the co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, disclosed that Harris is set to take on a more significant role in Biden’s reelection campaign. This announcement came amid ongoing concerns about Biden's ability to secure a second term following his lackluster debate performance.
