Meta Oversight Board Calls For Clearer Rules Against AI-Generated Pornographic Content

The internal Oversight Board at Meta Platforms Inc. META has demanded clearer regulations against AI-generated pornographic content on the company’s platforms.

What Happened: The Oversight Board, an independent entity funded by Meta, found the current rules inadequate in preventing the spread of AI-generated sexually explicit depictions of real individuals, Reuters reported on Thursday.

This decision comes after the Board reviewed and identified two pornographic deepfakes of prominent women, both of which were posted on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms. The Board stated that Meta’s rules against “derogatory sexualized photoshop” were violated and the company failed to promptly remove the content.

Meta has agreed to review the Board’s recommendations and will provide an update on any modifications made.

The Board has also criticized Meta for not adding the image of the Indian woman to a database that allows for automatic removal, a practice it deemed concerning.

Meta’s systems automatically removed the image of the American celebrity, a move deemed legitimate by the Board. It has recommended that Meta broaden the scope of its rules to cover a wider range of editing techniques, including generative AI.

Why It Matters: The issue of AI-generated pornographic content has been a growing concern globally. In the United Kingdom, the government has been preparing to criminalize the creation of such deepfakes. In the U.S., lawmakers have proposed the Take It Down Act, which would make it illegal to publish or threaten to publish deepfake pornographic images.

Meta’s challenges go beyond content control. The company has been facing backlash for mislabeling real photos as AI-generated on its platforms, sparking outrage among photographers and users. Meanwhile, cybersecurity experts have warned of the escalating threat posed by deepfake scams, which have led to substantial financial losses for companies worldwide.
