Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D) on Thursday, expressed his views on Tim Walz (D- Minn.) being chosen as Kamala Harris‘ running mate in the upcoming presidential election.
What Happened: During CNBC’s Squawk Box, Moore hailed Walz as a “great pick,” highlighting his “records” with Minnesota.
“This is a common-sense leader, someone who has been able to not only have Minnesota be one of the fastest growing economies…it is also the home of GM [General Mills], it is the home of United Health group, it is the home of Target. It currently has 2.9% unemployment rate,” Moore said.
“But also saying that you can be pro-business and also say you’re going to take care of the most vulnerable. It doesn’t have to be a binary choice.”
Moore added that he is emulating Walz’s steps in Minnesota which include fostering an environment for businesses to thrive by cutting regulatory redtapes while also focusing on addressing housing, child poverty and education.
“I think what the business community will see, in Tim Walz what you have is a successful chief executive of a state, and of a state that is doing economically well and there is a reason for that. Because having that data-driven, heart-led approach is something that does work,” he said.
Why It Matters: The selection of Walz as Harris’ running mate has stirred conversations among political and business leaders. Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban, for instance, believes that Walz has the potential to resonate with the public, as Harris did. Cuban stated that voters are tired of party ideologues and are looking for relatable figures.
Walz’s military service has also been a point of contention. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg recently defended Walz against attacks on his military record by Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) running mate of Republican presidential contender Donald Trump. Buttigieg criticized Vance’s denigration of Walz’s service based on his deployment history.
