Elon Musk Admits Tesla FSD Version Names Are Getting 'A Bit Silly' After Recent Update

Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that the EV giant is “getting a bit silly” with the naming of the different versions of its full self-driving (FSD) driver assistance technology.

What Happened: “We are getting a bit silly with our version numbers,” Musk wrote in response to FSD enthusiast Omar Qazi, who goes by the username Whole Mars Catalog.

Tesla follows a multipart policy for naming its FSD versions. The company started rolling out version 12.5.1.3 of its FSD software earlier this month. While the first part of the long version name refers to a major upgrade in performance, the others refer to minor enhancements and improvements deployed.

Why It Matters: Tesla is attempting to improve its FSD software to enable vehicles to operate without human intervention in the future. However, as of now, the technology requires active driver supervision.

Late last month, Musk said that the company has a "clear path" to vastly improving the performance of FSD in August and added that several versions of the software will be released in quick succession going forward for better performance.

Tesla’s dedicated robotaxi product expected to operate autonomously with the help of FSD is expected to be unveiled on Oct. 10.

The timeline for the deployment of fully autonomous FSD, however, is uncertain as it relies on both technological advancement and regulatory approval.
