Lucid Gravity SUV Offers Tesla-Compatible And Standard Charging: A Win For EV Drivers?

Zinger Key Points
  • An upcoming Lucid electric vehicle could have two different charging methods for consumers.
  • The two charging ports could give owners more options when it comes to charging their EVs.

Owners of the upcoming Gravity SUV from Lucid Group LCID could have more options when it comes to charging their electric vehicle.

What Happened: Electric vehicle company Lucid is set to begin production of the highly anticipated Gravity SUV in late 2024.

New images shared on social media over the weekend suggest the upcoming Lucid vehicle could have two separate charging ports.

The Gravity SUV is shown in images to have one charging port from the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) and one port for the Combined Charging System (CCS), according to a report from Teslarati.

Having two charging ports could give Lucid owners more freedom and options when it comes to charging their vehicle, and could also eliminate the need to have a charging adapter for the NACS like many other non-Tesla vehicles require.

Why It's Important: Many electric vehicle models are switching to the NACS for upcoming vehicle launches, and some older models have been able to use adapters to utilize the Tesla Supercharger network.

Lucid announced in November that it would adopt the NACS and utilize the Tesla Supercharger network for vehicles starting in 2025.

The Gravity SUV will mark the second official electric vehicle from Lucid, following its Air sedan.

Lucid's technology has been a key area of focus for the company, which could be highlighted by the new vehicles with two charging ports. Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said Lucid is "a number of years ahead" of Tesla in technology, in reference to his former employer.

"I think that if we look back in time 10-15 years ago, Tesla was the tech leader," Rawlinson said. “I think there's a degree of distraction now and I think that Lucid has taken that mantle.”

Lucid entered into a partnership with Aston Martin for an electric vehicle powertrain back in June 2023 and several other automakers have considered partnerships with Lucid.

LCID Price Action: Lucid shares trade at $2.93 versus a 52-week trading range of $2.29 to $6.80. Lucid stock is down 30% year-to-date in 2024.
