Germany has issued a European arrest warrant for a Ukrainian diver suspected of involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline attack.
What Happened: Berlin sent a European arrest warrant to Poland for a Ukrainian diver, identified as Volodymyr Z., believed to be involved in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline attack. Reuters reported that the suspect had already left Poland as his name was not included in a database of wanted persons by German authorities, Polish prosecutors revealed.
The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which transport gas under the Baltic Sea, were damaged by a series of explosions in September 2022, seven months after Russia initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. German investigators believe Volodymyr Z. was part of the team that planted the explosives.
Anna Adamiak, spokeswoman for the Polish National Public Prosecutor’s Office, stated that Volodymyr Z. was able to cross the Polish-Ukrainian border freely as his name was not included in the database of wanted persons by German authorities.
Why It Matters: The Nord Stream pipeline sabotage has been a topic of international concern. Earlier this year, European investigators accused Polish authorities of withholding key evidence related to the movements of alleged saboteurs on Polish soil, hindering the investigation.
This also comes amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, where Germany has supported Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the European Union. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously sought military aid from Germany and France, further complicating the geopolitical landscape.
