U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday pledged to always stand with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and bring autoworker jobs back to the U.S. ahead of Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump‘s visit to West Michigan.
What Happened: “American workers deserve a leader who keeps their promises and stands with workers when it matters—and as president, I will bring autoworker jobs back to this country, and create an opportunity economy that strengthens manufacturing, unions, and builds prosperity and security for America's future,” Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, wrote in a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
Harris alleged that Trump’s trade policies made it “far too easy” for Chrysler-parent Stellantis NV to outsource American jobs. She also alleged that Trump cut taxes for corporations as President, encouraging outsourcing, and loss of 200,000 manufacturing jobs.
Harris noted that she voted against the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) as a senator and added that she would impose a review process on the agreement if elected in the upcoming Presidential elections. The agreement, Harris said, is not sufficient to protect American workers.
“I will always stand with the UAW. Trusting Donald Trump again is a risk America’s autoworkers cannot afford,” Harris wrote while adding that Trump’s current promises of fighting for working people are “empty,” which he will not deliver.
Stellantis did not immediately respond to Benzinga‘s request for comment on the allegations of outsourcing jobs.
Why It Matters: The UAW endorsed Harris in July. UAW President Shawn Fain then praised Harris's track record of supporting the working class and her commitment to combating corporate greed. He mentioned her participation in the picket line with striking auto workers in 2019.
Harris, in turn, expressed her gratitude for the endorsement on X, stating, "I am honored to receive the endorsement of the United Auto Workers. From walking picket lines to taking on big banks, I have spent my entire career fighting for unions and working families—and, as President, I will continue to deliver for organized labor."
UAW is one of the largest unions in North America with over 400,000 active members. It represents workers at factories of several automakers including General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis.
Trump is scheduled to hold events in West Michigan on Friday. The former President is scheduled to speak at FALK Production in Walker on Friday afternoon after which he will hold a town hall at Macomb Community College in Warren.
