National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into 368,309 units of model year 2015-2017 of Ford Motor Co.’s F Edge SUVs over concerns of loss of braking ability, the U.S. auto safety regulator said on Friday.
What Happened: The NHTSA opened the investigation after it received 36 complaints alleging a loss of braking ability owing to a rear brake hose failure. The loss of braking ability, the regulator said, happens without warnings and results in an increase in stopping distance.
The investigation, the NHTSA said, is to determine the scope and severity of the alleged problem and to assess if any safety-related consequences exist owing to the issue.
Why It Matters: Ford sold 504,039 vehicles in the U.S. in the third quarter, marking an increase of 0.7% from the corresponding period last year.
In the three months through the end of September, the company sold 9,733 Edge vehicles alone, marking a slump of about 60% from the corresponding period last year.
