Chinese EV Maker XPeng Reveals Extended-Range Hybrid Tech Aimed At Foreign Markets

Chinese EV maker XPeng Inc. XPEV on Wednesday revealed its extended-range hybrid technology aimed at regions around the globe where charging infrastructure is weak.

What Happened: The system, called Kunpeng Super Electric System, will enable a car to drive over 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) with the help of both a battery and a combustion engine, allowing drivers to charge merely a few times a week, XPeng founder He Xiaopeng said at the company’s AI Day event in Guangzhou.

XPeng did not reveal which vehicles the technology will be deployed into or when.

The Chinese EV maker currently manufactures only battery electric vehicles. For the ten months through the end of October, the company delivered 122,478 EVs, marking a growth of 21% from the corresponding period last year.

Why It Matters: The extended range hybrid EV tech reveal from XPeng comes on the heels of a report from news agency Reuters that its rival Nio Inc NIO is working on a hybrid electric car under the Firefly brand.

While the vehicle is slated for launch in late 2026, deliveries are expected to commence in 2027, the report said, while adding that the vehicle will be sold in overseas markets including the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe but not within China.

However, Nio did not confirm the report.
