Church Of Jesus Christ Giving Machines Hit 106 Locations And Raised $32 Million Since 2017 – Where Is The Money Going And Who's Benefiting?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has launched its annual Light the World Giving Machines, available for donations throughout the holiday season. Beginning in 2017, the Church has put up these "vending machines with a twist," allowing donors to purchase essential goods and services for needy people. Since its inception, the program has raised over $32 million, benefiting millions worldwide.

Don't Miss:

How the Giving Machines Work

Instead of dispensing snacks or drinks, these vending machines allow people to purchase meals, school supplies, livestock, hygiene kits and even career training for those in need. Over 500 nonprofit organizations worldwide participate in this initiative. This year, the machines have expanded to 106 locations across 13 countries, including for the first time in Africa and Asia.

Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained, "Light the World is our message of glad tidings … gift by gift, we can be angels in the lives of others." By providing a hands-on way to give, these machines aim to make the act of service memorable and accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Where the Donations Go

The Church aims to ensure that 100% of the donations directly benefit the causes donors contribute to. It covers all operational costs and allows participating charities to allocate up to 10% of their proceeds to cover administrative expenses.

This year, some of the global charities the Giving Machines support include Save the Children, UNICEF, Catholic Relief Services and the World Food Program. Each nonprofit works to address pressing global issues like hunger, education and health care. For instance:

  • Donors can purchase two chickens to help families sustain themselves.
  • Refugee support kits provide essential items like blankets and hygiene supplies.
  • Livestock donations, such as goats, help communities achieve long-term sustainability.

The Reach and Impact

Since its inception, the Giving Machines have touched the lives of countless individuals. In 2023 alone, over 600,000 people visited these machines, contributing over $10.4 million in donations. Participating countries included the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Kenya and more.

The initiative doesn't stop at physical locations. Online giving options allow individuals who are unable to visit a machine to donate to the same charitable causes.

Expanding the Tradition of Giving

By offering a tangible way to give back, these Giving Machines turn the abstract concept of charity into an interactive experience that fosters connection and hope.

This year's expanded initiative ensures even more people can participate in bringing light to others' lives. Whether donating a meal, livestock or education supplies, each contribution through these machines represents a step toward a brighter future for those in need.

For those interested in participating, the machines will be available throughout the holiday season at locations worldwide. Alternatively, donations can be made online, offering another way to share the spirit of giving.
