Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency Co-Lead and CEO of Tesla Inc. TSLA, Elon Musk, expressed skepticism about the cost of electric vehicles for the U.S. Postal Service.
What Happened: On Friday, Musk reacted to a post by Sawyer Merritt regarding a $10 billion program aimed at purchasing electric vehicles for the USPS. Merritt highlighted that the initiative is significantly delayed, with defense contractor Oshkosh failing to reveal substantial manufacturing issues for over a year. The USPS has only received 93 trucks, far short of the 3,000 initially anticipated.
Musk commented, “That is a crazy price per truck,” reflecting his surprise at the program’s cost.
Why It Matters: The post also mentioned that the transition team of President-elect Donald Trump is contemplating canceling the contract to acquire over 60,000 more electric vehicles for the USPS. Musk’s reaction indicates his concern over the financial aspects of the program.
As per the Washington Post, the project was bolstered by $3 billion from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, a major legislative success for Biden. However, the delays now threaten the program’s role in the administration’s climate agenda. During a recent hearing, House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Kentucky) expressed concerns about potential reforms and the future of the allocated EV funds, emphasizing the end of “bailouts and handouts.”
Musk has been critical about government spending for a long time. Recently, he voiced strong criticism against the F-35 stealth fighter program, advocating for drones over manned fighter jets.
