Joe Rogan is sounding the alarm on artificial intelligence once again. In a recent episode of This Past Weekend, he sat down with comedian Theo Von to discuss the profound impact AI could have on society, power structures and even global competition. Rogan pointed out who he thinks is responsible for pushing us toward the edge – a group he casually referred to as "eggheads."
The AI-Controlled Narrative
Rogan and Von explored the idea that AI could soon shape the country. "Whoever controls the AI controls the narrative of the whole country," Rogan said, emphasizing AI’s sheer influence over what people see, hear and ultimately believe.

He pointed out how powerful AI systems will soon surpass human communication skills. “It’s going to be smarter than you and me. AI is going to be way better at communicating.” Rogan compared debating with AI to going up against someone far smarter than you in an argument – it's frustrating and you're likely to lose. Now imagine AI being as intelligent as all the brightest minds combined, able to control information and sway public opinion precisely. "We're going to look stupid," Rogan warned.
Generational Brainwashing?
Theo Von added his own concerns, suggesting it might take only a few generations of AI manipulation to completely reshape how society thinks. "Instead of controlling what people write, you control what the paper will say," he said. The idea is that by controlling the foundation of information, you can control everything else.
The China Factor
Rogan didn't hesitate to call out China as a major player in the AI arms race. According to him, China is not only stealing U.S. data but also leading in critical areas like drone technology. "They're way ahead in a lot of stuff," he said. While the U.S. might not have a choice but to accelerate its AI development to keep up, Rogan blamed the "eggheads" – tech and government elites – for recklessly charging ahead without considering the consequences.
“These f****** eggheads that are running us toward the edge of the cliff have to do what they’re doing because China’s doing it.”
Theo Von questioned what China is truly gaining from stealing data, but Rogan explained that replicating U.S. research and advancing its own AI gives China a significant advantage.
Trending: It’s no wonder Jeff Bezos holds over $70 million in art — this alternative asset has outpaced the S&P 500 since 1995, delivering an average annual return of 11.4%. Here’s how everyday investors are getting started.
In previous JRE podcasts, Rogan has already discussed how AI is replacing jobs – from robots on construction sites in China to automated cargo systems. Rogan sympathized with workers whose livelihoods are at risk, saying, "If you're a guy whose livelihood depends on that, you should be terrified."
He also discussed the broader societal impact if AI keeps advancing unchecked. AI could decide what resources we need, which corporations should have power and who's to blame for societal problems. Rogan warned that an "objective" AI could conclude that humans themselves are the issue. "That's the real risk," he said.
