Zinger Key Points
- After joking he might spend an extra 4 years as president after this term ends, Trump signed new exec orders beefing up the armed forces.
- 'To ensure we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military.' Trump said.
After joking with his GOP allies on Monday at the Trump National Doral Miami golf resort in Florida that he might stay in the White House for another term once his four years are complete, President Donald Trump jumped on Air Force One where he dashed off a few more executive orders. By the time he landed in Washington DC, we had the promise of an Iron Dome missile defense system and several others reversing what Trump described as a decline in military readiness mostly due to “woke” policies.
The Iron Dome
"We have to have a strong, strong defense," Trump said, when announcing that he'd be signing a directive to "immediately begin the construction of a state-of-the-art Iron Dome missile defense shield, which will be able to protect Americans," reported Fox News. “We’re going next to ensure that we have the most lethal fighting force in the world."
The proposed Iron Dome system is modeled after Israel's U.S.-funded billion-dollar air defense system, which intercepts incoming short-range rockets. Trump previously expressed admiration for Israel's military technology. "You see that with Israel where, out of 319 rockets, they knock down just about every one of them. So, I think the United States is entitled to that."
‘Woke’ Policies Are Out: Pete Hegseth’s First Day On The Job
Trump’s military orders coincided with the first day of work for new Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, known for his disdain for "woke" military policies and for questioning whether women should serve in combat roles. Hegseth was confirmed in the Senate last Friday in such a close vote that Vice President JD Vance had to break the tie with his vote.
Hegseth has pledged to overhaul military leadership and restore what he calls a "warrior culture" within the armed forces. Two more of Trump's executive orders will move that process along.
One calls for the removal of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the military and another will eliminate "transgender ideology" from the armed forces.
“To ensure we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military. It’s going to be gone,” Trump said at the Monday gathering in Florida, according to CBS.
The executive order directs the Pentagon to determine a policy for transgender service members based on readiness, a White House official said, per CBS, noting that the action does not immediately ban transgender service members.
A fourth executive order reinstates service members who were discharged for refusing COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
The reinstatement measure could impact approximately 8,000 former service members discharged between 2021 and 2023.
