'We're Going To Find Billions' – Trump Targets Pentagon For Deep Spending Cuts

President Donald Trump plans to turn his cost-cutting campaign toward the Pentagon’s $800 billion budget, backing Elon Musk’s efforts to find what he claims will be “billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse.”

“Let’s check the military. You know, the people elected me on that,” Trump told the Financial Times in a Sunday interview, praising Musk as “terrific” and a “great help” in scrutinizing federal spending.

The push to examine Defense Department spending has raised conflict-of-interest concerns, given Musk’s SpaceX and Starlink contracts with the government. However, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz dismissed the worries, telling NBC that “all of the appropriate firewalls” would be in place, though he provided no specifics.

Don't Miss:

“We do need great minds and we do need business leaders to go in there and absolutely reform the Pentagon’s acquisition process,” Waltz said. “The American people have said enough, enough with the bloat, the waste and the debt.”

The Pentagon initiative follows aggressive moves to restrict other federal agencies. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) employees were ordered Saturday to cease nearly all activities, including investigations and supervision, according to acting director Russell Vought. Trump has also vowed to eliminate the Department of Education.

The president's actions have drawn criticism from Democrats. “This is the most serious constitutional crisis the country has faced, certainly since Watergate,” Sen. Chris Murphy told ABC. “The president wants to be able to decide how and where money is spent so that he can reward his political friends, he can punish his political enemies.”

Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has faced recent setbacks. A federal judge in New York temporarily blocked the team’s access to Treasury Department payment data, citing potential “irreparable harm” to Americans from sensitive personal information disclosure.

While Republicans broadly support the cost-cutting push, some suggest refinements. Ohio Republican Mike Turner told ABC that while the country’s fiscal path was “unsustainable,” Musk needs to “in a more professional way, communicate with the American public.”

Republicans in Congress have maintained support for Trump and Musk’s initiatives, even though the spending cuts potentially undermine lawmakers’ constitutional role in authorizing federal expenditures. Turner said there is a need for a “critical view” of U.S. spending policies, despite his concerns about Musk’s communication approach.

The administration has already targeted several agencies, with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) administering foreign aid among the hardest hit.
