Elon Musk’s father, Errol Musk, recently opened up about his billionaire son’s privileged upbringing, emphasizing that Elon and his siblings grew up with luxuries far beyond the reach of most children.
Raised in Luxury
During an interview with Vlad TV, Errol Musk detailed how his children, including Elon and Kimbal Musk, lived an extraordinary lifestyle from a young age.
“They only rode in Rolls-Royce cars,” Errol said, explaining that by the time Elon was seven or eight years old, the family had moved beyond Mercedes-Benz vehicles to Rolls-Royces.

Beyond luxury cars, private twin-engine airplanes were also a standard mode of transport for the Musk children. “If you wanted to go somewhere, you got into a twin-engined airplane that belonged to you, and you flew there. Then you landed on your airstrip, and you went to your Lodge,” Errol added.
In addition to traveling in style, Elon and his siblings vacationed in Europe and learned to ski as young children. “They weren’t like other kids. They learned to ski in Europe when they were still 10 or under 10 years of age,” he said.

‘Hardship Was When the Hilton Ran Out of Fillet Steak’
Errol contrasted his children’s privileged lifestyle with his own upbringing, saying he never had a bed of his own until he was 10 years old. However, by the time he became successful, he ensured his children never faced financial struggles.
“To them, a hardship was when the Hilton ran out of fillet steak or something,” he joked.
Family Wealth and Financial Support
Despite their complicated relationship, Elon has continued to support his father financially. Errol confirmed that the Musk family has a foundation that provides financial assistance to family members.
“All the single women receive a monthly income,” Errol said. Even his ex-wife, Heide Bezuidenhout.
When Errol faced high medical costs, Elon stepped in to help. “My medical costs were nearly a million, and the medical aid only provided 600,000, so they [Elon and Kimbal] bridged that gap for me. That was a big help.”
Elon Gifted His Father a Bentley—Not a Tesla
In 2024, Elon gifted his father a Bentley Flying Spur, after offering to buy him a car. Errol initially considered getting a Tesla but ultimately chose the Bentley due to South Africa’s limited infrastructure for electric vehicles.
“It was originally going to be a Tesla which was going to be sent out here, but the price was astronomical,” Errol recalled. “We're not set up at all for anything like that, so I thought, ‘No, I don't want to be outside service range.'”
A Complicated Father-Son Relationship
Errol and Elon's relationship has long been rocky, with Elon publicly describing his father as a “terrible human being” in past interviews. Walter Isaacson's biography on Elon also highlights alleged tensions, including Errol's controversial past.
Despite this, Errol insists their relationship is not as broken as widely believed. He claims Elon recently inquired about his father’s memecoin venture, Musk It, and even invited him to the launch of Starship. The reunion included a rare father-son moment. “Elon put his arm around me and said, ‘My dad taught me everything I know about engineering,'” Errol recalled.
