Vice President JD Vance dismissed protesters outside a manufacturing plant in Michigan, questioning why they weren't working instead of demonstrating against potential Social Security cuts.

Speaking at Vantage Plastics in Bay City, Michigan last week, Vance took a jab at the demonstrators who gathered outside with signs opposing cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. "I’m sure all of us saw there were a few protesters outside," he said. "And I can’t be the only person wondering, you know, it’s a little afternoon on a Friday, and don’t you all have jobs?"
The protesters also held signs criticizing Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency, which has advocated for reducing Social Security spending.
Vance tied his criticism of the protesters to his broader support for American manufacturing. "We want those people to get off the streets and back to work. It’d be good for them, and it’d be good for everybody else, too," he added.

Tariff Policy Sparks Economic Debate
Vance's remarks came as President Donald Trump faces growing backlash over newly imposed tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico. The administration announced but quickly backed out of imposing 50% tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from Canada.
At the event, Vance defended the policy, insisting it would protect American jobs. "If you invest in America, in American jobs, in American workers, in American businesses, you're going to be rewarded," he said. "But if you try to undercut us and build outside of our borders, then President Trump's administration has got nothing for you."

Confrontations Over Ukraine Protests
Vance has faced backlash over his and Trump's treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a Feb. 28 Oval Office meeting. Trump told Zelensky to "make a deal with Russia or we are out," while Vance accused him of being disrespectful to the U.S.
In response, pro-Ukraine protests have followed Vance across the country. Over the following weekend, demonstrators gathered near his home in Cincinnati, carrying signs that read, "JD Vance: Ukraine’s kids are way more scared than yours" and "Ohio supports Ukraine." Vance later claimed the protesters followed him while he was walking with his three-year-old daughter. "If you're chasing a 3-year-old as part of a political protest, you're a shit person," he wrote on X.
His travels have also been met with opposition. During a recent ski trip to Vermont, pro-Ukraine demonstrators lined the roads in Waitsfield, prompting his family to change their plans and relocate to an undisclosed location. Vermont Gov. Phil Scott urged people to remain respectful, acknowledging political differences but emphasizing that Vance was visiting with his young children.
