Mark Cuban is once again openly criticizing Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

The billionaire investor took to BlueSky to criticize Lutnick after a recent wave of controversial comments and interviews from the Trump administration official. Cuban questioned, “Has Howard Lutnick done anything of value as Commerce Secretary?”

Controversial Social Security Remarks

Lutnick sparked backlash when he suggested that people who complain about not receiving their Social Security checks might be fraudsters. During an appearance on the “All-In” podcast, he said, “Let's say Social Security didn't send out their checks this month. My mother-in-law, who's 94, she wouldn't call and complain. She just wouldn't. She'd think something got messed up, and she'll get it next month. A fraudster always makes the loudest noise, screaming, yelling and complaining.”

He added, “Anybody who's been in the payment system and the process system knows the easiest way to find the fraudster is to stop payments and listen, because whoever screams is the one stealing.”

Lutnick claimed that older Americans typically wouldn't complain because they trust the government.

Cuban wasn't buying it. In response to a post sharing the comments, he wrote on BlueSky, "Has Howard Lutnick done anything of value as Commerce Secretary?" — a blunt swipe that quickly gained traction. His remark stressed a widespread frustration, especially among those who felt Lutnick's take ignored the financial reality for millions of retirees who depend on those checks to survive.

For instance, the first comment under the post said, “Lutnick is totally out of touch with reality!  How lucky for his mother-in-law, her Social Security checks were chump change… Do your homework Secretary! Many hard-working people who paid into the SS system live on these SS checks. Your fraudster comments are insulting, you ignorant snob!”

Clashing Over Trade Policy

Cuban also took issue with Lutnick's recent CNBC interview, where the commerce secretary praised tariffs and President Donald Trump's trade war strategy as a way to boost U.S. manufacturing. Earlier this month, Cuban fired back on BlueSky, writing, “Someone needs to explain to our Sec of Commerce how capitalism works.”

Cuban pointed out that while manufacturing may need attention, the U.S. has a strong global trade surplus in services — and that's where the focus should be. “America has a global trade surplus on services. Services have the highest margins and profits of our exports. That is where capital and expertise [are] focused,” he wrote.

Lutnick, a billionaire himself and longtime CEO of financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, has been a vocal supporter of Trump's economic approach. But critics like Cuban see his comments and strategies as disconnected from the realities most Americans face.
