In 2017, Lamborghini Gave Pope Francis A Custom Supercar Valued At $950,000. Here's What He Did With It

In November 2017, Lamborghini gifted Pope Francis a one-of-a-kind Huracán. The sleek white supercar, detailed with gold stripes along the hood and body, was presented to the pope outside his residence at Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City.

Instead of keeping the luxury ride, Pope Francis blessed and autographed it, then decided to auction it off for charity. By May 2018, the Lamborghini sold at Sotheby’s in London for an impressive $950,000.

Helping Rebuild After ISIS Destruction

According to the Catholic News Agency, the proceeds from the auction were split between several charitable causes personally selected by the pope. A significant portion — about $240,000 — went to Aid to the Church in Need, which used the funds to rebuild parts of Iraq’s Nineveh Plains devastated by ISIS.

Alessandro Monteduro, director of Aid to the Church in Need Italia, said, “With the two projects described, Aid to the Church in Need wanted to honor the donation of the Holy Father by concretely placing itself alongside the Christians attacked by ISIS.”

Pope Francis allocated the rest of the proceeds to other humanitarian causes. Donations were made to support victims of human trafficking through the Pope John XXIII Community, and to fund medical and missionary work in Africa through GICAM and Friends of Central Africa.

The Internet Reacts: “There’s Someone Out There With A Popeborghini”

When the story resurfaced online, Reddit users had a field day. “So there's someone out there with a Popeborghini?” one comment joked, earning more than 23,000 upvotes.

Another quipped, “It just doubled in value,” now that the pope has passed away, while others imagined the pope doing donuts in the Vatican parking lot at the time. Some pointed out the symbolism of the sale, saying Pope Francis, “wants for nothing and it’s not worth the public scrutiny to accept” such extravagant gifts.

The humor flowed freely, but many users also expressed genuine admiration for Francis’ decision to turn an ultra-luxury gift into a powerful act of charity.

Not the First Time

Pope Francis has made a habit of auctioning off high-end gifts for good causes. In 2013, he sold a Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide he had received, fetching about $327,000 for charity, far more than the bike's original value.

Other popes have done similar things. Ferrari once gifted the final Enzo ever made to Pope John Paul II, who declined to keep it. The car was auctioned off to aid victims of the 2004 South Asian tsunami.

Pope Francis’ Lamborghini Huracán wasn’t just a flashy headline — it resulted in real help for communities desperately trying to rebuild their lives.

“The pope doesn’t drive,” one Reddit user joked. But in this case, he drove something far more important: change.
