Dive into the epicenter of change at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference (CCC) in Hollywood, Florida, on April 16-17, 2024. As Florida undergoes a possible shift in cannabis policy, you’ll be right where history is being made.

Nearly a million Floridians rallied behind a ballot initiative, steering the state towards potential legal reform. This isn’t just any conference; it’s your gateway to being part of a monumental moment in Florida’s history.

The Leap From Medical To Recreational Cannabis

This moment in Florida’s history centers on a ballot initiative that could reshape the state’s approach to marijuana. Currently, Florida’s laws are tailored for medical marijuana, available only to those with specific health conditions and prescribed by a physician. But this 2024 ballot initiative, championed by Smart & Safe Florida and supported by Trulieve TCNNF, could be a game-changer: It aims to legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older, allowing the possession of up to three ounces. This suggested change is part of a broader national trend toward more relaxed cannabis policies, symbolizing a shift in both societal attitudes and legislative approaches to this once-taboo subject.

However, it’s already been a big year of change for Florida regarding cannabis. In February of 2023, the Florida Senate Criminal Justice Committee approved a bill that would legalize recreational marijuana, allowing those 21 and older to purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis. This bill also proposes the creation of a Medical Cannabis Production and Regulation Program overseen by the Department of Health. Additionally, a separate legal cannabis measure, also sponsored by Sen. Rob Bradley, received a hearing to create a regulatory framework for the production, sale and taxation of cannabis products.

Over the past decade, NORML has recognized the efforts of more than 120 cities across the United States that have passed ordinances aimed at reducing penalties for marijuana-related violations. Among these, Broward County, where the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference will be held, is one of 15 counties in Florida that have taken proactive steps to lower local penalties for such offenses.
