The Garden State’s cannabis industry will take center stage at the upcoming Benzinga Cannabis Market Spotlight on March 4, 2025, at the Delta Hotels by Marriott in Somerset. This event aims to delve into New Jersey‘s burgeoning cannabis market, offering insights into retail opportunities, supply chain logistics, and regulatory frameworks.

A Brief History of Cannabis Legalization in New Jersey

New Jersey’s journey with cannabis reform began in 2010 when the state legalized medical marijuana through legislative action. A significant milestone was achieved on Feb. 22, 2021, when Governor Phil Murphy signed the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory, Enforcement Assistance, and Marketplace Modernization Act into law, legalizing cannabis use and possession for adults aged 21 and over.

This move followed a 2020 ballot referendum where New Jerseyans overwhelmingly supported legalization. The first recreational cannabis sales commenced on April 21, 2022, marking the state’s full entry into the regulated cannabis market.

Recent Developments in New Jersey’s Cannabis Industry

The state’s cannabis market has experienced robust growth, surpassing $1 billion in combined medicinal and recreational sales in 2024—a nearly 25% increase from the previous year’s total.

However, the industry faces challenges. In December 2024, the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission approved an increase in the Social Equity Excise Fee (SEEF) by $1.26 per ounce, effective Jan. 1, 2025. This fee aims to fund social equity programs within the state.

Additionally, the state has taken steps to regulate hemp-derived THC products. In November 2024, New Jersey authorities announced enforcement of a ban on hemp products containing THC or derivatives that are “not naturally occurring,” addressing concerns over unregulated products entering the market.

Benzinga Cannabis Market Spotlight: What to Expect

The upcoming Benzinga event will feature diverse speakers, including industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and policymakers. Notable participants include Dianna Houenou, commission chair of the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission, and Christopher Riggs, its acting executive director.
