- The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a special investigation of Norfolk Southern Corp's NSC organization and safety culture concerning recent derailments and fatal accidents in the railroad's operations.
- The NTSB said it was taking the step "given the number and significance" of accidents and called for Norfolk Southern to review and assess its safety practices immediately.
- Norfolk Southern came under scrutiny as cleanup and environmental-monitoring efforts continued in an Ohio town after the derailment of a train carrying hazardous chemicals.
- The agency has launched investigations into five significant accidents involving Norfolk Southern since December 2021.
- The NTSB will also review October 2022 Norfolk Southern derailment in Sandusky, Ohio, as part of the special investigation.
- "The continued safe operations of Norfolk Southern is vital to the United States," the NTSB said. "The NTSB is concerned that several organizational factors may be involved in the accidents, including safety culture."
- Norfolk Southern Chief Executive Alan Shaw is slated to testify before a Senate panel on Thursday about last month's derailment, WSJ reports.
- The company stated that Louis Shuster, a Norfolk Southern conductor, was fatally injured early Tuesday morning at the Cleveland-Cliffs Inc CLF Cleveland Works property in Cleveland, Ohio.
- The fatal accident comes a day after Norfolk Southern's six-point plan to immediately enhance the safety of its operations.
