In June 2020, rumors circulated that Apple Inc AAPL was venturing into the world of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
Today, as the tech giant’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) takes off, investors and tech enthusiasts are anticipating a walk-through of the Cupertino, California-based company's newest product — its AR/VR headset.
But, what if you had invested $1,000 in Apple when the AR/VR rumors started? Shares were trading at $351 at the time, so a $1,000 investment would've yielded an investor 2.85 shares.
Though, Apple enacted a 4:1 stock split in late August 2020. The original 2.85 shares would've ballooned to 11.4 shares.
Fast-forward to Monday, June 5. Apple shares are changing hands at around $184 — an investor holding onto those 11.4 shares from the original $1,000 investment would now be looking at a value of around $2,097.60.
A total gain of $1,097.60, or a return of 109.76%, excluding dividends.

Apple is developing two versions of the headset. The first version is expected to be released in 2023. A more budget-friendly version follows at a later date, according to Mac Rumors.
In terms of design, Apple aims for a sleek look, akin to Meta Platform's META Oculus Quest. Mac Rumors noted that Apple's headset will be equipped with two high-resolution 4K micro OLED displays and over a dozen cameras for tracking hand movements and gestures.
The device will run on “xrOS,” a new operating system, and feature a dedicated App Store focusing on gaming, streaming video, and video conferencing.
It’s also set to support voice control, skin detection, spatial detection, and expression detection.
