America is facing an affordable housing crisis, one that's likely to worsen amid rising tariffs and economic uncertainty. This issue was a significant focus in the most recent U.S. election and continues to be a major concern for many Americans. A recent Pew Research study highlighted this, revealing that 69% of Americans are “very concerned” about housing costs. And for good reason: the average price of a home in the U.S. now exceeds $350,000, pushing many potential buyers out of the market. It’s not just low-income individuals affected. A combination of limited inventory, rising mortgage rates and stagnant wage growth is also keeping middle-class buyers on the sidelines.
Boxabl, the startup hailing out of Las Vegas, believes it has a solution. Founded in 2017 on the idea that homes can be mass-produced in a factory similar to cars, Boxabl has developed a patented production process that enables it to build modular, prefabricated homes that are produced at scale in its factory and can fold up for transportation to the final installation location.
With a goal of enabling the homes to be stacked and connected to each other, Boxabl empowers homeowners to create their dream house at their price point.
Casita Gaining Traction
The company reports that its flagship product, the 361-square-foot Casita, has already received traction in the market. These prefab homes sell for around $60,000 for a semi-furnished home that's equipped with a fridge, oven, dishwasher, microwave, washer, dryer and air conditioning. In May 2021, Boxabl won a $9 million contract to build and deliver 156 Casitas for a military base. That was its first large-scale order, and the company has continued to expand, including a partnership with homebuilder DR Horton, which it inked in February of 2022. This partnership was the first of its kind for Boxabl and included investment and resource sharing, as well as a phase 1 order for 100 Casitas.
Since then, Boxabl has expanded its manufacturing facilities with two more buildings and received approval in California and Nevada to sell Casita homes across both states. In California, Boxabl hopes to be a solution for the residents who have been left homeless due to the recent devastating fires as well as for victims of other natural disasters. The Casita can be rapidly deployed to help families rebuild their lives after tragic and devastating events, says the company.
Nevada is also a key market for the company. “We are proud to bring the Casita to Nevada,” Paolo Tiramani, CEO of Boxabl said when announcing the company can sell its modular homes in Nevada, “This approval not only reflects the hard work of our team but also solidifies our ability to provide Nevadans with a revolutionary housing option that is affordable, fast to deploy and built to last.”
Enter The Baby Box
But Boxabl isn't stopping there. The company recently introduced Baby Box, a compact living space on wheels that can be towed by a pickup truck. The home, which has an introductory price of $19,999, can be set up with only one person and without the need for special tools. What's more, as a towable RV, Boxabl says it anticipates that Baby Box will require little to no permitting, site preparation or foundation. Homeowners connect to power with an extension cord and connect to water via a garden hose. The semi-furnished home comes equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, dining area, couch, pullout bed, mini-split AC for heating and cooling, color changing lights, storage space, water tank, waste tank and battery for off-grid living. The company is prioritizing orders for a minimum of 50 units, but individuals can also join the waiting list on the company's website. Boxabl expects deliveries to begin in late 2025. “The Baby Box is a testament to our mission of making quality living spaces available to everyone, whether they need a home, workspace, or temporary accommodation," says Tiramani.
Boxabl is trying to solve a huge problem in society, and it offers investors the chance to join it on its quest. The company has raised over $150 million via equity crowdfunding, has over 40,000 investors and has built more than 600 homes to date. Boxabl also reports it has received interest representing the potential for 190,000 Casita orders and 53 patent filings. Not too shabby for a startup with transformative dreams.
