In the complex and ever-accelerating world of container shipping, efficiency and transparency are paramount. ODeX, a freight payments and documentation tech platform, is at the forefront of this transformation, streamlining shipping documentation and payments to enhance the global trade landscape. Siblings Liji Nowal and Binai Thoppil have steered ODeX to significant milestones, and their journey offers a compelling story of innovation and resilience.
Impact on Freight Markets and Trade
ODeX might not influence freight rates directly, but its impact on the container shipping ecosystem is undeniable. “Over the last two years, ODeX has had a significant impact on the container shipping ecosystem in India, the Middle East, West Africa, and now the United States,” says Liji Nowal. The platform has dramatically changed invoice management and payment reconciliation, offering a single unified view of all Bills of Lading, shipments, invoices, payments, and releases on one dashboard.
This transparency has drastically improved cargo release timelines from days to hours, leading to measurable efficiency gains and cost savings. “Our platform has brought in seamless communication among multiple stakeholders—shipping lines, BCOs, freight forwarders, agents, port terminals, banks, and more—improving the overall customer experience and making trade operations nimble, smooth, and fast,” adds Binai Thoppil.
Rapid Expansion and Its Challenges
ODeX’s rapid expansion to 14 countries in just 24 months is a testament to its robust model and the founders’ strategic vision. However, this growth spurt wasn’t without its challenges. “Each new market has its own regulations, cultural differences, and operational requirements, which we've had to adapt to quickly,” says Liji. Maintaining consistent service levels across different regions, managing a growing team, and ensuring the technology could handle increased loads were significant hurdles.
Integrating the platform with various local systems and gaining the trust of new stakeholders in diverse markets required considerable effort and strategic planning. “We managed this rapid growth through rigorous planning, innovative thinking and open communication among our teams, customers, and partners,” notes Binai. “Of course, lots of support from our investors, well-wishers, and a bit of lady luck also played a part.”
Running a Company as Siblings
Running a business with a sibling comes with unique dynamics. For Liji and Binai, it has been a rewarding experience. “We know each other’s strengths and can rely on one another to handle various aspects of the business effectively,” says Liji. Their complementary skill sets and deep trust have been instrumental in driving ODeX's growth. “It's sometimes easier to align our vision for ODeX, take decisions swiftly, and move quickly when you're siblings,” adds Binai.
The built-in support system is another benefit. “We can lean on each other during challenging times and celebrate our successes together,” says Liji. However, there are also challenges. “We can never take a vacation together, and sometimes one of us has to skip important family events. Family conversations often veer into office talk,” notes Binai. Despite these challenges, their shared vision and complementary skills have been crucial in driving ODeX's success.
ODeX is pushing to revolutionize the container shipping industry with its innovative platform that enhances efficiency and transparency. The rapid expansion, strategic adaptability, and the unique sibling dynamic at its helm make ODeX a standout success story in global trade. As Liji and Binai continue to scale and innovate, ODeX is poised to bring even greater benefits to the global shipping ecosystem, making trade operations smoother and more efficient than ever before.
