Around one in five American adults suffer from chronic pain, with a higher prevalence among military veterans due to training and combat injuries. Rising life expectancy and obesity rates also contribute to more people being diagnosed with arthritis. Physicians typically prescribe opioids to relieve pain, but these medications are addictive and can be abused for the sense of euphoria they provide, especially by people who are self-medicating their mental health issues.
The risks of opioids and their potential for addictiveness have led many people to search for alternatives to manage chronic pain. One such alternative is kratom, a natural supplement derived from the Mitragyna speciosa plant, a relative of the coffee plant that is native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. For many centuries, people have used kratom as a source of energy, chewing on the leaves or brewing it into tea. It has also been used traditionally to treat ailments such as pain, diabetes, and diarrhea. In low doses, kratom may provide energy and focus, as well as a potentially soothing effect in higher doses, thanks to its active components, such as mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, that are thought to activate the brain's opioid receptors.
A study by Chulalongkorn University in Thailand found that kratom has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Furthermore, the study also indicated that kratom is being used to detoxify and manage withdrawal symptoms from opioids, alcohol, and other drugs.
Seeking a way to manage their symptoms while avoiding dangerously addictive opioids and narcotics, many are turning to kratom, which has led to it becoming a billion-dollar industry in the US, where it is frequently consumed in capsule, gummy, drink, or ‘energy shot' form.
Tim Drescher, chief operating officer of Mitragaia, a leading manufacturer and distributor of kratom-based products, says that the company has seen high demand for kratom from veterans. He adds that they receive many emails from customers, telling how using kratom has helped them manage their conditions and allowed them to regain a sense of normalcy in their lives.
According to Drescher, Mitragaia recognizes how important its products are for many veterans, who have risked their lives and well-being for the country. The company has introduced a veterans discount program, where veterans receive 20% off, applicable even on top of other promotions. More than a hundred veterans have joined the program, which makes kratom and its benefits more accessible to them and their families.
"Many of our customers, including veterans, have told us that they are taking kratom because they were sick of the pain management routine that they were on, which led them to look for alternatives," Drescher says. "They say that their pain pill regiments make them feel flighty and like they’re not all there, and those that have become addicted have seen their health and relationships suffer. For years, people have been looking for natural, healthy alternatives. For many of them, kratom fits the bill, and we are committed to bringing the best quality products that meet their needs."
