The most recent American Association of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting this month was a high-profile stage for the increasing medical field recognition and approval of at-home IPL hair removal treatments.

Led by esteemed plastic surgeon and dermatologist Dr. Adam J. Rubenstein representing Ulike, discussions on stage at the AAD Annual Meeting focused the increased effectiveness, medical acceptance, and accessibility of at-home hair removal treatments using IPL technology.

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) was previously a clinical treatment for unwanted hair removal, but recent years have seen a proliferation in affordable at-home products featuring this technology including those from brands like Ulike. IPL uses broad spectrum light destroying hair follicles for permanent hair removal. The technology is used by men and women alike, though there are some differences in the handheld devices for men and women, with the men's product optimized for more coarse hair.

Ulike's North America General Manager Leona Liu provided insights into their growing share of the at-home treatment market. "Many recognize that at-home IPL offers a convenient, cost-effective option for those who can’t regularly visit a clinic. We’re also seeing growing support from clinicians who view at-home IPL as a complementary treatment, rather than competition, allowing patients to maintain results between professional sessions. Of course, there’s always some skepticism in the industry regarding at-home treatments, but our commitment to clinical research, FDA-clearance, and dermatologist endorsements helps overcome that hesitation."

Ulike claims its products are "virtually painless" and can complete a full body treatment in just 10 min. The at-home treatment products from Ulike are all under US$350, making them highly accessible compared to an appointment at the dermatologist.

Leona Liu continued how "the future of beauty is personalized, tech-driven, and results-focused. Consumers want clinic-quality treatments without clinic prices or wait times, and technology like IPL is making that possible. As at-home treatments become more sophisticated, we’ll see a shift where dermatologists integrate these solutions into their recommendations."

Part of the company's growth strategy in the US, one of its most important markets, is to continue building recognition in the medical field, advocating for at-home IPL as a dermatologist-approved alternative to in-office treatment. This was their main reason for having such a significant presence at the AAD Annual Meeting, along with the release of their latest IPL hair removal device, the Ulike Air 10, giving them a presence that has the feel of a brand that's just getting started.
