In a March 19 interview with British broadcaster Nigel Farage, former U.S. President Donald Trump delivered sharp criticism toward Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, blaming them for Queen Elizabeth II's distress.
Trump, who met the queen during his presidency in 2018 and 2019, voiced his respect and admiration for the monarch, lamenting the perceived disrespect shown by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

"I think there was great disrespect to a person I got to know very well and like — the queen. She was unbelievable, you know," Trump said, reflecting on the strong impression Queen Elizabeth left on him.
The queen, known for her resilience and diplomacy during her 75-year reign, met with nearly every U.S. president during her lifetime. Trump, expressing his view on the matter, suggested that Harry and Meghan’s actions and public statements were particularly hurtful.
"Although she wouldn't show it because she was strong and smart, I imagine they broke her heart," he said, alluding to the challenges the queen faced in her final years. "The things that they were saying were so bad and so horrible, and she was in her 90s hearing this stuff."
During the interview, Trump did not hold back on his admiration for Queen Elizabeth, who died in September 2022, praising her flawless tenure.
"She rarely made a mistake," he said, pointing out the rarity of her missteps over such a lengthy period. This respect was contrasted by his views on Prince Harry and Markle's decision to step down from royal duties and relocate to the U.S. in January 2020 — a move Trump described as "very disrespectful to the royal family."
The decision to step down from royal duties also had a significant financial impact on Harry and Markle. Choosing financial independence from the royal family meant giving up a secure, taxpayer-funded income stream. This has pushed Harry and Markle to forge their own path, signing deals with streaming services and publishers. However, the success of these ventures relies on maintaining a positive public image. Any controversies or negativity surrounding them could potentially impact their earning potential.
The former president also touched on a contentious issue regarding Prince Harry's immigration status in the U.S. linked to his admitted drug use in his 2023 memoir "Spare." Trump hinted at potential legal implications, stating, "We'll have to see if they know something about the drugs, and if he lied they'll have to take appropriate action," suggesting a legal review could be warranted.
Trump has had issues with Prince Harry in the past. The tension seems to be traced back to Markle's criticism of Trump during a 2016 panel discussion, and it escalated with Trump's remarks in various interviews and public appearances.
Trump, never one to hold back his opinions, shared his perspective on Prince Harry and Markle, offering a glimpse into the intricate mix of personal relationships, public perceptions and the less visible tensions within the British royal family.
