Justine Musk, known for her work as a fantasy author, once shared a life far removed from the public spectacles that define her ex-husband, Elon Musk, today.

"It was the first time that a boy found my sense of ambition – instead of my long hair or narrow waist – attractive," she said. Their connection persisted through college, despite Elon's transfer to the University of Pennsylvania, blossoming into a business partnership.

After college, Elon moved to Silicon Valley, where he co-founded Zip2, a company that would eventually sell for nearly $300 million. Justine faced the realities of marrying a tech mogul. Two months before their wedding in January 2000, Elon introduced the idea of a financial agreement, a precursor to their nuptials that signaled the complexities of wealth. "I was now engaged to a wealthy one," Justine said. Elon's wealth transformed their lives, from a modest condo to extravagant purchases like a McLaren F1 and private flying lessons.

As the Musk family’s lifestyle evolved, Justine observed a shift in their personal dynamic. “It was a dream lifestyle, privileged and surreal,” Justine said, “But the whirlwind of glitter couldn’t disguise a growing void at the core.” Elon, increasingly absorbed by his ventures, was physically present yet mentally distant. Justine yearned for the connection they once shared: “I longed for deep and heartfelt conversations, for intimacy and empathy.”

Justine sought he love and equality that defined their early relationship. "I wanted to love and be loved, the way we had before he made all his millions," she said. However, as Elon's public and financial stature grew, Justine felt increasingly sidelined.

The marriage, enriched by the birth of five children, ultimately crumbled under the weight of shifted priorities and evolving identities. Reflecting on her life with Elon, Justine acknowledged a disconnect from the woman she once was. The social circles that came with Elon's status demanded conformity and diminished the presence of ambitious women, leading to Justine's realization that her own aspirations and needs were being eclipsed by her husband's.
