New Study Surprises Many As Houston Ranks Among Top Cities for Affordable Child-Raising: Families Save Thousands Compared to Other Major U.S. Metros

Houston, Texas, the fourth-largest city in the United States, brings a pleasant surprise as it ranks 13th among the most affordable places to raise a child, according to a recent study from SmartAsset that observed the costs of child care across 50 of the largest metros in the U.S. This study, offering insightful metrics, provides a reassuring outlook for families considering their financial future

Don't Miss:

As any parent knows, raising a child involves significant expenses, including child care and additional housing. The SmartAsset study reveals that in Houston, the annual cost of raising a child is about $21,000, with $10,000 of this allocated to child care and about $2,600 for additional housing. Despite these costs, Houston remains notably below the national average of $25,181 per year to raise a child in a large U.S. metro.

In contrast to Houston, the Boston area is the most expensive place to raise a child, with costs reaching nearly $38,000 per year. The top 10 most expensive places, which include Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, and Denver, all cost over $30,000 per year to raise a child, ranging from $14,500 to $25,000 annually per child just for child care expenses.

SmartAsset's study used the MIT Living Wage Calculator to identify the various costs of raising children, including medical expenses, transportation, food, etc. It compared the living costs of a household with two working adults and one child to a household with no children and two working adults to more accurately estimate these costs.

Houston's affordability reaches beyond just lower child care and housing costs. The city boasts a robust economy with diverse job opportunities that can support the incomes of growing families. As one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., Houston offers a rich quality of life with a myriad recreational activities and new places to explore.

Despite its affordability and economic standing, a study from WalletHub ranked Houston 145th out of 182 for best places to raise a family in the U.S. This ranking included factors such as family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability, and socio-economic rank.

For families looking for the best place to raise their children while managing costs, consider the following tips:

  • Budget carefully: Create a detailed budget to effectively track all child-related expenses.
  • Use community resources: Take advantage of low-cost or free community resources, programs, and events to lower costs.
  • Talk to a financial advisor: Consulting a financial advisor can help you get a better grasp on your finances as you plan for the future.

While Houston is affordable for raising a child, thorough financial planning and leveraging community resources can offer even greater benefits if you decide to live there.
