NBA Star Shaq Learned 'True Meaning Of Pressure' After His Dad Took Him To A Homeless Family – He Paid $36,000 To Get Them Off The Streets

Shaquille O'Neal might be one of the greatest basketball players, but even legends feel the heat. During his rookie season with the Orlando Magic, a rough game against the New York Knicks left him frustrated and doubting himself. His late stepfather, Phillip Harrison, wasn't about to let Shaq wallow. Instead, Harrison delivered one of the most memorable lessons of O'Neal's life – and it wasn't on the court.

After a tough game against the New York Knicks, Shaq was feeling the strain of the NBA. He'd gone up against Patrick Ewing and hadn't performed well. Back at his hotel, his phone rang. "My father says, ‘Get your a** home right now. I don't want to talk to you. Be here tomorrow at 0500. If you don't, I'm going to knock your a** out,'" Shaq recalled in a video posted to YouTube in June 2024.

O'Neal took a private plane home and arrived on time the next morning. "I'm there at 5 a.m. and he's already dressed. We get in the car and we ride," he said. Confused, Shaq asked what was going on. "‘Shut the hell up, we're just riding,'" Harrison responded.

Eventually, they encountered a homeless family sitting on the street – a man, his wife and two kids. Harrison stopped the car and the two of them observed silently. After a while, Harrison asked Shaq about the game. "He said, ‘What happened to the game yesterday?' I said, ‘Man, I don't know. I let the pressure get to me.'"

That response didn't sit well with Harrison. "‘You spoiled mother f***er, making all this money, talking about pressure? This is pressure,'" he told Shaq, pointing to the homeless family. "‘When you don't know where your next meal is coming from.'"

The lesson hit Shaq hard. He exited the car and approached the man to hear his story. "He said, ‘Look man, I just lost my job, I just got down on some hard times.' But he was very dedicated. Like, ‘I'm going to get back, I'm going to get back.'"

Moved by their situation, Shaq decided to act. "I said, ‘Alright, hold on.'" He called a friend and asked, "You still got them apartments that you're building? I need a three-bedroom apartment today. How much? $36,000. I'm going to wire you the money."

But Shaq didn't stop there. After securing a home for the family, he asked the man what kind of work he could do. "I said, ‘What do you like to do?' He said, ‘Man, I'll do whatever.'" Shaq called another friend who ran a lawn service company. "I'm going to send this guy over. Boom boom boom. Make sure he gets paid, whatever. I'll pay you back."

The family's story came full circle two years later. "Two years after that, the guy started his own lawn service," Shaq said. "He was cutting my grass in Orlando."

Reflecting on the experience, Shaq shared how it changed his perspective. "Pressure to me is when you don't know where your next meal is coming from."
