When Shaquille O'Neal and MrBeast sat down for The Big Podcast in January 2025, things quickly escalated – as they often do when two larger-than-life personalities collide. What started as a casual chat about Beast Games, Kobe Bryant and even the idea of buying TikTok turned into Shaq challenging MrBeast to test their endurance in one of the most mentally grueling environments: an anechoic chamber, the world's quietest room.
"I keep seeing this soundproof room – something they say if you stay in there for an hour, you get $500,000 or $5 million," Shaq said. "Me or you can do that. I'm confident enough to say I can do it, but I know you can do it."

- BlackRock is calling 2025 the year of alternative assets. One firm from NYC has quietly built a group of 60,000+ investors who have all joined in on an alt asset class previously exclusive to billionaires like Bezos and Gates.
At first glance, sitting in silence for an hour might seem like an easy task. However, anechoic chambers are designed to eliminate all external noise, making the human body its own soundscape. Within minutes, people begin hearing their own heartbeat, blood flow, and even bones shifting. The experience is so unnerving that most can't handle it for long. While Shaq claimed the record was 58 minutes, reports suggest the longest confirmed endurance time is around 45 minutes.
According to CNN, despite widespread rumors, there is no official world record for the longest time spent in an anechoic chamber, and such endurance challenges are not formally recognized or encouraged.

MrBeast, who has buried himself alive, spent days in solitary confinement, and tackled extreme endurance challenges, was instantly intrigued. "I know what you're talking about. Every time I see someone tap out, I'm like … what? Like, because it's quiet?"
On the other hand, Shaq had no doubts about his ability to power through. "Bro, my father was a drill sergeant," he said with total confidence. "I'll just go to sleep."
The idea of Shaq and MrBeast facing off in a test of mental resilience is the kind of spectacle fans would love to see. While one became a dominant force in basketball and the other redefined digital entertainment, both share a key trait: they do everything on a massive scale.

Beyond their competitive spirits, Shaquille O'Neal and MrBeast have used their success to make a real difference. Shaq's Shaquille O'Neal Foundation provides scholarships, supports children's health initiatives and funds life-changing opportunities for underserved youth. He's also known for spontaneous generosity, from covering medical bills to buying families new homes. MrBeast, through Beast Philanthropy, has raised millions for environmental causes like TeamTrees and TeamSeas, rebuilt homes for disaster victims and provided clean drinking water to communities in need.
Now, the only question is – will this challenge happen? And if it does, who cracks first? Either way, it's bound to be legendary.
