Understanding the Volatility Alert: 
Overall sentiment is considered &quot;bear&quot; when broad market activity of the stock has been shown to indicate a negative directional basis, or is considered &quot;bull&quot; when indicating a positive directional basis. The securities lending volatility indicator provides a signal when it detects unusual short activity. Unusual short activity is based off a computer generated algorithmic formula utilizing securities lending trade details such as the volume of shares being shorted, the rate being paid to short the shares, and the type of collateral being posted - amongst other variables. The current volatility is the respective trading day&#39;s calculated securities lending volatility value. The volatility percentage change is the percentage difference in volatility between the two most recent days. The recommendation is a suggestive strategy, inferred from the strength of the Signal Trending, Current Volatility, and Volatility % Change. As the year drew to a close, the OTC Markets realized an expected slump in trading volume compared to November; however, trading is still up compared to previous years.
The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/santa-claus-rally">Santa Rally</a> may have steered investors&rsquo; attention towards the S&amp;P 500 Exchange-Traded Fund (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/spy#NYSE">SPY</a>), which closed at an all-time high and recorded 1.9 billion in trading volume. The fall in Bitcoin&rsquo;s (BTC) price and the stalling of cannabis legislation were likely other factors that influenced the change.
Despite these drawbacks, some securities on the OTCQX and OTCQB experienced unexpected increases in trading volume, potentially hinting at their ability to sustain interest amid activity in other markets.&nbsp;
<h2>OTCQX: Cryptocurrency Leaders Shift and Cannabis Operators Stall</h2>
12 of the top 20 traded securities on the OTCQX experienced a reduction in trading volume, resulting in an average decline of 12% across the top 20 in December.
Cryptocurrency miner Voyager Digital Ltd. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/vygvf#OTCQX">VYGVF</a>) experienced a 69% decrease compared to last month, while leaders Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>) decreased 17% and Grayscale <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/is-ethereum-a-good-investment/">Ethereum</a> Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ethe#OTCQX">ETHE</a>) decreased 8%. Cannabis operators Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tcnnf#OTCQX">TCNNF</a>) and Verano Holdings Corp. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/vrnof#OTCQX">VRNOF</a>) followed suit with a 31% and 40% drop in trading volume as compared to last month.
Interestingly, despite the fall in trading volume for both securities, Grayscale <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/is-ethereum-a-good-investment/">Ethereum</a> Trust has usurped Grayscale Bitcoin Trust as the most traded security on the OTCQX for the first time in months. The two companies, along with Roche Holdings AG (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rhhby#OTCQX">RHHBY</a>), remain the top three traded on the OTCQX, with a collective dollar volume of more than $10.4 billion in December.
adidas AG (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/addyy#OTCQX">ADDYY</a>) and Akzo Nobel N.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/akzoy#OTCQX">AKZOY</a>) experienced increases in trading volume in December. Adidas AG&rsquo;s trading volume rose to slightly over $300 million marking a 51% increase from the prior month, and Akzo Nobel an even larger 86% increase in the same period. Other companies like Roche Holdings, Deutsche Telekom AG (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/dtegy#OTCQX">DTEGY</a>) and Novonix Ltd. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nvnxf#OTCQX">NVNXF</a>) also saw increases in trading volume with smaller magnitudes.&nbsp;
<h2>OTCQB&nbsp;</h2>
In the OTCQB, 13 of the 20 top traded securities experienced a reduction in trading volume, with DMG Blockchain Solutions Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/dmggf#OTCQB">DMGGF</a>) and American Lithium Corp. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/liacf#OTCQB">LIACF</a>) bearing the strongest decreases.
Fannie Mae, or the Federal National Mortgage Association (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fnma#OTCQB">FNMA</a>), Freddie Mac, or the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/fmcc#OTCQB">FMCC</a>) and Netlist Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nlst#OTCQB">NLST</a>) retained their spots as the first-, second- and third-most traded securities, while trading volume on Galaxy Next Generation Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gaxy#OTCQB">GAXY</a>) increased from the prior month.
Notably, Cypress Development Corp. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cydvf#OTCQX">CYDVF</a>) graduated from the OTCQB Venture Market to the OTCQX Best Market on Dec. 21, 2021.&nbsp;
<h2>International Presence</h2>
Internationally, half of the top 20 traded securities on the OTCQX come from outside North America. Switzerland&rsquo;s Roche Holdings AG maintained its spot as the third-most traded OTCQX security, while Germany&rsquo;s adidas AG came in fourth. France&rsquo;s Danone (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/danoy#OTCQX">DANOY</a>) and BNP Paribas SA (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bnpqy#OTCQX">BNPQY</a>) came in seventh and eighth, maintaining a significant hold on interest from the prior month.
Among international operators, United Kingdom&rsquo;s Anglo American plc (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ngloy#OTCQX">NGLOY</a>) experienced the third-largest volume increase, realizing a 48% month-on-month change. Meanwhile, The Netherland&rsquo;s Akzo Nobel N.V. experienced the largest volume increase with an 86% change compared to November.&nbsp;

These OTC Securities Had the Most Trading Activity in December

As the 3rd quarter came to a close in September, the OTC Markets saw a slight decrease in total trading volume even as companies reported quarterly earnings. As has been the theme in 2021 cryptocurrency trusts from Grayscale Investments LLC drove the most volume along with some standouts from the biotech and energy sectors experiencing impressive volume as well.
In September, the combined total dollar volume on OTC Markets reached just over $51.1 billion, edging 2.7% lower than the previous month&rsquo;s volume. The OTCQX and OTCQB markets, however, remained relatively unchanged compared to August dollar volume numbers.
<h2>OTCQX</h2>
Grayscale Ethereum Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ethe#OTCQX">ETHE</a>) and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>)&nbsp; traded places as the top 2 securities on the OTCQX Best Market in terms of dollar volume for the month with ETHE taking the top spot. Institutional traders may have driven this shift as a new <a href="https://data.cryptocompare.com/reports/digital-asset-management-review-september-2021">report</a> found that institutions preferred ETHE over GBTC <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/21/10/23209459/for-the-first-time-ever-institutional-traders-favor-grayscales-ethereum-trust-over-bitcoin">for the first time ever</a> in September.
The OTCQX also witnessed some international standouts. Tesco PLC (OTCQX: TSCDY,) a United Kingdom-based grocery store and general merchandise retailer, experienced a 146% increase in September trading volume. The company is expected to report strong results in October and has also seen consistent sales growth throughout the pandemic.
Netherlands-based paint company Akzo Nobel N.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/akzoy#OTCQX">AKZOY</a>) saw a precipitous fall in the price of its shares in both August and September, which may be one of the factors that drove a 114% increase in its trading volume in September. The company also reported a disappointing quarter in August.
<h2>OTCQB</h2>
In the OTCQB Venture Market, Netlist Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nlst#OTCQB">NLST</a>) maintained its No. 1 spot as far as trading volume for the month of September, followed closely by CytoDyn Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cydy#OTCQB">CYDY</a>) which jumped to the No. 2 spot.
CytoDyn has made headlines recently with its cancer and HIV therapeutic leronlimab that it is currently testing for possible COVID-19 applications. Nevertheless, the company has also been experiencing some internal strife between activist investors and leadership.
The largest changes in month-over-month dollar volume in the OTCQX market came from a handful of energy companies.
Australian energy companies Boss Energy Ltd. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bqssf#OTCQB">BQSSF</a>), which recently joined the OTCQB Venture Market, and Bannerman Energy LTD. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bnnlf#OTCQB">BNNLF</a>) both saw substantial increases in trading volume in September.
Both companies announced positive advancements in their respective Uranium mining projects. Bannerman announced that it would begin a new uranium mining project in Namibia, and Boss also reported it is ahead of schedule in its Australian mining operations.
enCore Energy Corp.&nbsp; (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/encuf#OTCQB">ENCUF</a>) also had an increase in trading volume for the month of September on news that it had successfully completed its acquisition of Azarga Uranium creating a leading uranium mining company with a plethora of U.S.-based projects.

These OTC Markets Securities had the Most Trading Activity in September

Dollar volume on OTC Markets increased across the board in October, a surprising twist considering many investors were thought to be standing pat into the presidential election.&nbsp;
Overall, dollar volume across the entire OTC Markets increased 7% month-over-month in October, according to the company. The OTCQX Market experienced a 25% increase while the OTCQB Market had a 12% increase.
Like in recent months, investors continued to focus their attention on cannabis and crypto names.&nbsp;
The Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>) was the most actively traded security on the market in October. Its $2.1 million in dollar volume during the month was a 76% increase from September. While some of that increase is due to the rising price of bitcoin, the increased trading activity in the Grayscale Ethereum Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ethe#OTCQX">ETHE</a>) suggests continued enthusiasm for the overall crypto theme.&nbsp;
