On April 30, 2020, CEO Robert Kramer declared during an earnings call that the company had &#8220;proven manufacturing capabilities&#8221; and was prepared to scale up quickly to meet the demands of vaccine production.&nbsp;
In July 2020, following the AstraZeneca agreement, Emergent further bolstered its claims in a press release, with Kramer declaring, &#8220;Emergent is driven by our desire to advance solutions that will make an impact on this pandemic&#8220;.&nbsp;

After that, in November 2020, AstraZeneca representatives visiting Emergent&#8217;s Bayview facility raised concerns about poor oversight and GMP compliance.&nbsp;
Emergent&#8217;s VP of Manufacturing acknowledged these issues, mentioning trash buildup in hallways and lapses in GMP standards. An external consultant also warned that the facility was &#8220;NON-CGMP compliant&#8221; and at regulatory risk, but production still continued.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size">Contamination Crisis at Emergent's Facility</h3>
In March 2021, a major contamination incident at Emergent's Baltimore facility revealed significant oversight failures. Millions of Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine doses were mixed with AstraZeneca ingredients, an issue initially detected by Johnson &amp; Johnson's lab in the Netherlands, not Emergent. 
The contamination forced the disposal of tens of millions of AstraZeneca doses and delayed the delivery of approximately 100 million Johnson &amp; Johnson doses during a critical phase of the pandemic.&nbsp;
Following this disclosure, Emergent issued a press release, stating that their &#8220;quality control systems worked as designed&#8221; and that discarding a batch of bulk drug substance &#8220;occasionally happens during vaccine manufacturing.&#8221;&nbsp;
However, that same day the Associated Press released FDA documents obtained through FOIA requests, revealing a history of quality control issues at Emergent&#8217;s facilities dating back to 2017.
FDA leaders reported that the company &#8220;hired a lot of individuals not as familiar with vaccine manufacturing that did not have adequate training.&#8221;&nbsp;
Inspectors found several issues at Emergent's facility, including mismanaged waste, peeling paint, and cluttered equipment. They also discovered that some quality checks were removed from vaccines before an FDA visit in February 2021.&nbsp;
Later, it came to light that Emergent had been forced to destroy vaccine materials equivalent to nearly 400 million doses — much more than the previously reported 85 million.
The situation worsened on November 4, 2021, when Emergent announced that the Department of Health and Human Services had cancelled its $628 million contract, requiring the company to reverse $86 million in Q3 2021 revenue and reduce its contract backlog by $180 million.
The impact on investors was clear as Emergent's stock price dropped by over 60%, from more than $120 in early 2021 to below $45 by November 2021.

These disclosures and the sharp drop in stock price led shareholders to file multiple lawsuits against Emergent, accusing the company of misrepresenting its vaccine production capabilities and concealing serious quality issues.

After three years of legal proceedings, in September 2024, Emergent agreed to pay $40 million to settle the lawsuit from shareholders. Business owners approached her with urgent requests for help. &#8220;It got to the point where in one of those conversations a woman I was chatting to started to get emotional. The one woman said, &#8216;I met you for a reason today. I need help,'&#8221; Eldridge recalled.
These interactions prompted two years of in-depth research involving nearly 60 industry leaders across 20 sub-sectors. What the EQUA team found was alarming. Canadian cannabis operators faced inflated premiums, limited market capacity and policies riddled with exclusions.
Jardine elaborated on the practical impacts of stigma, particularly for cultivators and processors. &#8220;You could have a neighboring risk that&#8217;s a greenhouse and they would have completely different premiums for the exact same size facilities&#8230; We have coined that the cannabis surcharge,&#8221; he noted.

However, EQUA has taken a proactive approach to dismantle these barriers, rooted in education and collaboration. On Nov. 21, Solana hit an all-time high, which comes years after the cryptocurrency was nearly left for dead and investors fled after former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested.
Here&#8217;s a look back at the fall of FTX and Bankman-Fried&#8217;s arrest, which may have been a good starting point to buy Solana.
What Happened: Solana's<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42122387/solana-soars-10-reaches-new-all-time-high-market-cap-what-is-going-on"> all-time high</a> comes with meme cryptocurrencies once again surging in popularity and optimism that ETFs based on the fourth-largest crypto could be approved similarly to Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) and Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) ETFs.
With a market capitalization of $121.0 billion, Solana ranks fourth trailing only Bitcoin, Ethereum and stablecoin Tether.
While Solana now trades over $200 a coin, the crypto was one of many that fell on previous news surrounding FTX, including the company's bankruptcy and the arrest of founder Sam Bankman-Fried.
On Dec. 12, 2022, Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas after criminal charges were announced against him by U.S. prosecutors.
He was later <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/23/11/35581805/ex-ftx-ceo-sam-bankman-fried-found-guilty-on-all-criminal-fraud-charges-faces-up-to-115-ye">found guilty</a> on seven counts of criminal fraud in November 2023. The announcement of the verdict initially caused a decline in the prices of&nbsp;<a href="http://benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/23/11/35583286/bitcoin-ethereum-dogecoin-tumble-after-sam-bankman-fried-found-guilty-on-all-charges-analy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">several major cryptocurrencies</a>.
Among the charges against the former FTX CEO were wire fraud, securities fraud, commodities fraud, money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
The former FTX CEO <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/03/37988324/sam-bankman-fried-sentenced-to-25-years-judge-points-to-ambition-political-manipulation">was sentenced to</a> 25 years in prison in March 2024.

Investing $1,000 in Solana:&nbsp;The bankruptcy of FTX and arrest of Bankman-Fried were among the top negative headlines for the cryptocurrency sector over the last year.
Solana is one of many cryptocurrencies that saw high volatility around those events. The cryptocurrency was also linked closely to FTX, given the cryptocurrency platform&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/22/11/29685871/ftx-is-dead-solana-is-not-sol-sees-positive-volatility-as-community-concurs-sam-bankman-fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">former large position</a>&nbsp;in the coin and Bankman-Fried once telling a user on Twitter, now known as X, that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/21/11/24160231/ftx-founder-sam-bankman-fried-may-have-had-one-of-the-best-2021-crypto-callouts-how-much-s" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">he would buy</a>&nbsp;all the Solana coins he could at $3 each.
For an investor in Solana, the arrest of Bankman-Fried could have been an ideal entry point, considering the cryptocurrency's price drop and subsequent rebound following the event.
On Dec. 12, 2022, Solana traded as high as $13.46. A $1,000 investment in the coin at its daily high could have acquired 74.29 SOL. The $1,000 investment would be worth $18,924.63 today. This represents a potential return of 1,792.5% over the past nearly two years.
For comparison, the S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust, which tracks the S&amp;P 500 stock market index, is up only 49.2% over the same time period.
While it remains to be seen if Solana can continue moving higher, investors who recognized that Bankman-Fried&#8217;s arrest and trial would be short-term bearish for cryptocurrency would have been pleasantly rewarded.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Jupiter&#8217;s Challenges: A Dual Front</h3>
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/02/37083640/jupiter-research-weed-vape-cartridges-mso-brand">Jupiter, TILT's vape subsidiary</a>, is contending with both operational setbacks and broader market shifts. U.S. sales dropped to $9.4 million in Q3 2024, down from $15 million in the same period last year, even after adjusting for the transition of half its sales to a 15% distribution fee model. 
Canadian sales grew 11% to $6.4 million but saw gross margins collapse from 29% to zero. Zuanic calculates that Jupiter's distribution fees could generate $9 million annually at 100% gross margins, with the remaining $53 million in sales yielding 20% margins. This would produce $20 million in gross profit, making Jupiter potentially profitable with $10 million in EBITDA.&nbsp;
However, Zuanic remains cautious about the sustainability of these projections given continued market share erosion.

"There are entire communities that are not seeing that progress. Many families continue to be impacted by it every day," said Dr. Allison Arwady of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to The NY Times.

As Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/04/38312639/tesla-stock-on-free-fall-ahead-of-crucial-q1-earnings-here-are-key-levels-to-watch" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fell for a fifth straight session</a> on Thursday, breaching a significant psychological threshold, Cathie Wood&#8216;s Ark Investment Management ramped up its acquisition of the stock, while also bolstering its holdings in crypto-related exchange-traded funds.



Doubling Down On Tesla: Across its&nbsp;ARK Innovation ETF&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARKK#NYSE">ARKK</a>),&nbsp;ARK Autonomous Technology &amp; Robotics ETF&nbsp;(CBOE: ARKQ), and&nbsp;ARK Next Generation Internet ETF&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARKW#NYSE">ARKW</a>), Ark purchased 88,720 Tesla shares on Thursday, amounting to approximately $13.30 million based on Tesla&#8217;s closing price of $149.93.



Ark has been consistently accumulating Tesla shares for three consecutive sessions this week, accumulating a total of $26.89 million worth of shares.



This surge in buying activity comes amid Tesla facing downward pressure throughout the week, with analysts revising their estimates and price targets downward in anticipation of a disappointing earnings report next week. Concerns about the company&#8217;s recent announcement of significant&nbsp;layoffs,&nbsp;plans to seek shareholder approval for CEO&nbsp;Elon Musk&#8216;s compensation package, and uncertainties surrounding the potential deprioritization of the sub-$30,000 electric vehicle have all contributed to the stock&#8217;s weakness.



On Thursday, Tesla closed at its lowest level since January 25, 2023.

Expanding Crypto Exposure: While Ark has been <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/04/38214834/cathie-woods-ark-invest-sells-20m-coinbase-shares-as-bitcoin-trades-over-70k-buys-palantir-sells" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gradually reducing its exposure</a> to crypto-related stocks like Coinbase Global, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COIN#NASDAQ">COIN</a>) and Robinhood Markets, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HOOD#NASDAQ">HOOD</a>), it refrained from trading these shares on Thursday. 



Instead, Ark augmented its positions in ETFs with crypto exposure.

<li>Ark&#8217;s ARK Fintech Innovation ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARKF#NYSE">ARKF</a>) 490,751 units of its recently launched spot Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) ETF, the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (CBOE: ARKB) valued at $31.19 million.</li>



<li>Ark&#8217;s ARKW added 42,800 Proshares Ether Strategy ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EETH#NYSE">EETH</a>) valued at $2.90 million.</li>

ARKB, which commenced trading on Jan. 11, 2024, has appreciated by approximately 36%, riding on the coattails of Bitcoin&#8217;s rally, which has surged by about 34% since its inception.



On the other hand, ARKZ, an actively managed ETF launched by the Wood-led firm, aims for 100% exposure to&nbsp;Ethereum&nbsp;(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) by investing in ether futures contracts. The fund, boasting approximately $11 million in net assets, has yielded approximately 24% year-to-date.



Meanwhile, Bitcoin has strengthened amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. At last check, the premier cryptocurrency climbed by 0.72% over the past 24 hours to reach $62,141.40, according to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/lxquj26b2sag" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro data.</a>



ARKK fell 0.26% on Thursday before closing at $42.91.
